This review is from: El Camino de Santiago a Pictorial Pilgrimage (Paperback)
This is definitely a one of a kind, and for me at least; it took a little time to appreciate it. My wife still disagrees with me, but she hasn't really sat down and looked at it (and this is a "look at" book).
Not quite the size of your usual coffee table book, this 8 1/2 by 11 book is a book of color images, almost like a slide show on the Camino de Santiago. Some pages have a single image, others maybe four or five. Simple captions on most pictures, none on some, but it tells a story, and very effectively.
On first glance, I was taken aback. It is a matte finish paper and the colors are over bright, sort of like when our local newspaper bragged about the great new color presses it was getting, and the photos were still, well, a long ways from my expectation of a color photograph. I set the book aside for a few days, and picked it up later when there was a peaceful moment in our usually hectic schedule.
I sat back, just open to the experience, and started thumbing through the book again. It looked different. I had sort of relaxed my gaze, and the sensation was very much like looking through a book filled with watercolor sketches, and very positive. I then went through the entire book, reading all the captions, enjoying the flow of colors and reliving our walk across the Camino de Santiago.
The colors are larger than life, due, I think, to the wonders of Photoshop, but the journey is larger than life and the photos fit.
I don't know if this is the book for you. As I said, my wife doesn't share my opinion, but it is unique. I've read most of the books on the Camino de Santiago, probably own most of them, but this one has it's own special niche. Amazon's cover image gives a fair sample of what is inside. Double click the image and make your own judgement. If I were the author, I would scan in two or three pages and post them as customer images, to give a better feel for the book.
