One of many great Scarlet Pimpernel novels

Baroness Emmuska Orczy wrote a dozen or more novels--a series on The Scarlet Pimpernel. If you aren't familiar with this character, he was an English aristocrat who with a league of his friends would disguise themselves and save French aristocrats who were about to be guillotined. He would use his wits mostly although some of the movies and TV series have him using a sword and more action than you find in the books. There are villains, heroes and romances going on. The whole series is addictive and absolutely enjoyable. Once you start reading, it is hard to put down because you are kept on the edge of your seat.
The only thing I don't care for is that a lot of the French names are hard to pronounce (since I don't know French).
The best thing about these books is that you can get them for the Kindle for free since they are in the public domain now. You can also find some that are not free. I don't know if the ones you pay for are any better--possibly they have been edited more? I find that when I read free books that are in the public domain, there are often typos or something that shows the story was scanned and OCR performed. Unless it is gone over and edited carefully, you will see a little of that.

I love this book! It is definitely my favorite book with Marguerite (except for TSP of course!).
Sir Percy takes on what is possibly his biggest challenge yet - rescuing the Dauphin of France. When a certain member of the League (who also happens to be related to our hero) falls in love with a French actress, Percy is caught by archenemy Chauvelin. Marguerite is not long in coming after him, and with all of these people depending on the SP, he may not be able to rescue himself. With Percy pitted against Chauvelin... well, things will get very interesting.
Things start off slowly, the main focus being on Armand. But the slow start doesn't last for long. With a great plot, a few Marguerite/Percy moments, and a tight conflict between our two favorite enemies, this book definitely rates five stars.

I remember reading this book and loved it back then. Fast forward to a few decades later and I still love it. The romantic idealism that is dominant rocks!
