It Really Is Just Three Chords,
By krimboy (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Electric Warrior (Expanded) (Audio CD)
Time has been kind to Marc Bolan. No rocket scientist, Marc always just assumed his boppy elfin schtick set to the simplest of boogie beats would be accepted by one and all as the works of a genius. Initially adored mainly by 12 year old girls in England, his music has grown in stature over the years as tastes changed leaving him high and dry as the sole purveyer of a perculiar (in all senses of the word) style of rock that has over time proved remarkably difficult to reproduce. Electric Warrior is to Bolan what Ziggy Stardust was to Bowie (his friend at the time). Electric Warrior cuts loose from Bolans previous hippie ramblings, best realised on "Beard of Stars", and powered by superb production, and the judicious use of real musicians, the album boogies its three chord wonders into an entirely new domain that retains its unique charms to this day. Not deep, not complex, not even all that sensible, Electric Warrior nevertheless works and provides a telling reminder that 'pop' music is a rush that dosn't have to make sense it just has to make you feel good. Very good.

Absolute Sonic Bliss,
This review is from: Electric Warrior (Expanded) (Audio CD)
Most of "Electric Warrior" is slow, driven, hypnotic, subdued, and absolutely cool. At its conclusion, the galvanizing "Rip-Off," the album finally and literally explodes in a lightning-blast of aural fury. Anyone who expects the extravagance and excess that is usually associated with the term "glam rock" will be either disappointed or pleasantly surprised. Personally, I was in a state of bliss from "Mambo Sun" to "Rip-Off." "Electric Warrior" will never lose its freshness. It will never get old. It will never become boring. This is an ecstatic musical work. I have found musical heaven, and its name is "T. Rex."

Hands down classic,
By Michael Topper (Pacific Palisades, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Electric Warrior (Expanded) (Audio CD)
This is one of the best rock and roll albums ever. Period. From the irresistable opening beat of "Mambo Sun" (very pioneering and ahead of its time) to the last frenzied saxophone squeals of "Rip-Off", this album screams "masterpiece". Something special happened during the making of this work, a mix of raw, inspired backing tracks and slick but idiosyncratic prouduction touches (namely, Visconti's expert string production and Flo And Eddie's giddily androgynous backing vocals), to make it pure magic from start to finish. Bolan focused his Tolkein-esque world into a postmodern blend of 50s rock and 60s cosmic vision that created the 70s and influenced everyone in England at the time. The tracks are irresistably catchy, so much so that even after thousands of listens the album remains fresh; the tag of "70s Beatles" was given to many artists during the decade but here it seems the most apt. The true spirit of rock'n'roll lies in this work: the intuitiveness, the energy, the *spirit* are all here, wrapped in the fireball of persona that was Marc Bolan. Of all of his albums, "Electric Warrior" is also the one reissued the most, and this is the best remaster job, slightly better than the import remaster in sound and packaging. There is no excuse not to hear this album, or buy it over again for improved sound; "Mambo Sun", "Cosmic Dancer", "Get It On", "Girl", "Jeepster", "Planet Queen" etc. are all as rip-roaring, rocking and achingly beautiful as they've always been, and capture such a timeless moment in time that there is really nothing to compare it to.
