Product Description

Product Description

An abbreviated version of the more advanced "Electromagnetic Fields and Waves", the second edition of Lorrain and Corson's "Electromagnetism and Applications" is a text for applications-oriented, one-semester courses covering all the essentials of electromagnetism - from Coulomb's Law to Maxwell's Equations. Many features of the longer work appear in this version, including: problems from the current literature; worked examples and chapter summaries; and true perspective drawings. This edition benefits from a general streamlining including revised and updated chapters on induced electric fields and simplified coverage of alternating currents.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn E&M, go elsewhere, Nov 4 2005

This book is simply horrid. After reading a section, you are left with all kinds of questions. The examples really are horrible, because they don't relate to any of the end of chapter problems, which practically require a physics degree to work through. Some answers are provided, but there is no solutions manual.

Everything about this book just seems to informal like "Take this volume and surface, this is the equation for electric field...", that's about as exciting as it gets. This is one of the most frustrating textbooks I've ever had to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pity that this book is not well known, April 7 2000

I started with minimal knowledge in vector calculus and was very much discouraged by the fact that I was unable to evaluate even a naive-looking integral (that comes with a reciprocal of some radical). This book was THE ONLY BOOK that taught me how to do that. Now, I learn very nice things about fields (such as there exists no electric field inside a hollow shell of a conducting body) and mathematically how such is possible! Overall, I must say, this book is different.
