A new first-person fighting engine enables players to trade punches with an NHL tough guy. Feel what it's like to be on the ice in the skates of an NHL player to throw and dodge punches. On ice toughness and intimidation is taken to a new level in NHL 10 where winning one-on-one battles for possession of the puck along the boards becomes a test of will and skill. Utilizing an all-new board physics engine, players can use their body to shield the puck on the boards and then kick-pass it to teammates. Bigger, stronger players pin opponents to the boards while fanatical fans bang on the glass, just like real life. Fore-check defenders, pressure the puck and finish checks to intimidate your opponent into mistakes. Players fatigue, bobble passes, and avoid collisions under threat of constant physical pressure. Inspire teammates, ignite the fans and change the momentum of a game by instigating scrums, drawing penalties, and mixing it up, all after the referee blows the whistle!

First off, NHL 09 is hands down the best hockey simulation I've played. So for EA to top this with NHL 10 would be very difficult. That being said, NHL does have some enhancements that improve on the predecessor. The first person fighting is more realistic. The passing is a lot harder and takes getting used to, but now you can use the boards to pass the puck. NHL 10 has a board play feature where you can pin the puck to the boards and kick it to you teammates. As always, the online team play is the best feature of this game. Having 6 guys play on a team is unreal. Another feature is the penalties after the whistle. I was all for guys getting penalties when you get run over after the whistle in NHL 09. But in this game, after the whistle, the play can go on for 20 seconds with no penalties being called. It just seems to drag out the game, when all you really want to do is get back to playing. You can boost your players abilities by playing games and keep your grade at a certain level. This would include stick and skates. This year, you can use microsoft points to make your player better.
So if you're the casual game player, then nhl 09 is all your need. But if you're hockey fan, then this game is for you.

This is very much the same game that started out in a rough phase with NHL 08, was refined to great heights; and has been lovingly polished this year. The game is a lot of fun, the gameplay is outstanding out of the box and is amazing once you start to play with the sliders a bit. The online play is addictive and so is the Be a Pro mode which is at its best this year. The only mode which I thought could use a bit of tweaking is "Be a GM" which feels stale as even the menu is ripped off from previous incarnations. It would have been fun to see the president/owner or even media come into play more often in the season.
This game is still hours upon hours of fun, very much a worthy successor the NHL 09.
