Two of the finest Final Fantasy games ever made....,
By A Customer
This review is from: Final Fantasy Anthology (Video Game)
While I have enjoyed every game in the series, let's just face thefact that ever since the series went all-graphics and presentation, some of the other features that make a good rpg have gone downhill. The stories are weaker, the characters are less likable and the battle systems are either too confusing or too dull.Anyway,Final Fantasy Anthology is a testament to what Final Fantasy used to be.Unpretentious, fun and full of heart. The first game in this collection is Final Fantasy V.Now,I won't lie.Part V is not perfect. Its story and characters are weaker that in say IV,VI or VII.However, its battle system is the greatest of any game in this series.I can spend hours just messing with that wonderful job system. There's many possibilities with the way you can battle here. But not in that every character is basically the same aside from the limit breaks way.You can make every character useful and unique in their own way. Now,yes, the story is only okay but it's not terrible.By Final Fantasy standards,it's just fine.Let's face the fact that few Final Fantasy games have truly great stories that live up to the hype, anyways. The characters are subpar, though.Still better than the first game's completely faceless characters but blah compared to its predecessor,FFIV.The graphics are perfectly fine considering the time. The music is still beautiful even today.Basically, despite the weak story, this is one of the better Final Fantasy games because of the battle system and huge fun factor. The other game in this collection is the mother of all good rpgs Final Fantasy VI.Many people say this is the best of the series and quite frankly with the exception of FFVII,none can compete. Its story is wonderful. It even improves on IV's standards and the characters are more likable than pretty much ALMOST anybody from IX or X.The battle system isn't as godly as V's but it's still a lot of fun and the characters all have something that can make them useful in battle unlike VIII where the only true difference lied in the limit breaks. As far as I'm concerned, despite the dated graphics,FFVI is still far more impressive than most of its successors.I guess I have to mention the music. The music of VI remains the best of any game in the series. In my opinion,FFVI is as flawless as a game can be.So basically with Anthology, you get a great game that suffers slightly because of the story and characters AND you get one of the greatest games of all time.Oh yeah and both games suffer a bit here because of all those loading times but at least the few FMVs are really nice.

One of the greatest games of all time,

I've adored FFVI since it was released as FF3 in North America. I also loved everything I heard about FFV, so I bought Anthology when I found it. I haven't regretted it for one minute. If you like true RPGs then you will love this set.FFV is amazing. You can probably find storyline summaries, so I'll just say that the graphics were state-of-the-art in their time, the storyline is great compared to some of the more modern Final Fantasies, the characters are cute (although Faris' pirate accent can get on your nerves), the music is fantastic, and the job system is the best ability system in any FF to date, IMHO. I ran into a problem on the Save screen on my PS2, but I went into the menu and changed the Disc Speed (I run a PS2 Slim, on PS2 original I believe it's under the PS1 driver menu) which not only cuts the loading times by an amazing amount (it's almost like you're playing it on a cartridge again!) but it also makes the save screen pop up normally more often for me. If you can't get it to appear normally, just remember that the three selections are Memo, Slot 1 and Slot 2 from top to bottom. Make sure your mem card is formatted so you don't get confused when you try to save and it doesn't. Then just go to the selection you want and press X, then X again (or, if you want to use multiple save spots, you can press Down after you press X the first time, just make sure you're not overwriting any of your other save files that you might want to keep!) FFVI is one of the greatest RPGs ever, possibly even one of the best games ever. The characters are interchangeable and interact with each other in certain situations (even giving you cut-scenes if you have certain people in your party together), the enemies (well, Kefka, at least) are almost believable, and you can't help but feel with the characters going through the storyline. The graphics were the best possible on the SNES/SuperFamicom console, and the music is perfect throughout. The CD included has a lot of nice music on it, although I would have loved to have heard the music from, for example, Celes' opera. Even so, there are a few themes on here worth listening to, such as The Dungeon, Mambo de Chocobo, Phantom Train, Johnny C. Bad, and Epitaph. All in all, definitely a 5 Star set.

This is an excellent version of FF6 (FF3 in the US), and also includes the first international translated release of FF5 for those of you who never played it. Both games feature CG movies at the beginning and end, and a few bonus extras that are unlocked once you finish the games. Graphics are the same as the SNES, which was ahead of its time anyway. The CG movies are amazing, and really put you into the mood to play. The sound effects and music sound a little different on the PSX than on the SNES version (in my opinion the SNES version sounds a little better), though only hardcore fans who own both will notice. The PSX version is played in emulation, so while the sound itself is played at a higher sampling rate (better quality), a lot of the SNES echo/reverb effects that are unique to the SNES SPC700 sound chip are missing. This is minor though and not enough to detract from gameplay, the PSX version still sounds great. My only gripe is bringing up status menus takes longer than the SNES, everything else is excellent and worth the money (and I even already own the SNES version!). (NOTE - You can play this one on a PS2, as I do, just make sure you have a PSX memory card. You can get one here at good value: Ps One Memory Card . Also the save menu for FF5 looks a little funny on a PS2, but you can still save and the rest of the game plays excellently)
