Portal 2 is a unique first-person Action-Puzzle-Platforming game that tests player's ability to think and act creatively as they use the game's ingenious wormhole creating portal gun to produce their own paths through otherwise sealed surfaces and across the open spaces of the game. Sequel to the original Portal game -- the surprise add-on hit included in Valve Corporation's 2007 release The Orange Box -- Portal 2 continues the storyline from the first game, featuring both new and returning characters, and poses a range of new challenges making for a much deeper game. Additional features include a new two player co-op mode and an original soundtrack.

Welcome Back to Aperture Laboratories

In Portal 2 players awake in the Aperture Science Labs as Chell, the heroine of the original game. A great expanse of time has passed since the conclusion of the first game and the gameworld has fallen into visible disrepair, but placed in suspended animation, Chell has survived intact and is revived. With the help of a robotic entity the concluding events of the past game are revealed and you escape your initial confinement, but in doing so GLaDOS, the the AI computer antagonist from the previous game is also reawakened. Just as fickle as ever, GLaDOS' motives are unknown. Insisting on testing you, it may assist you but may also be planning something more sinister.

Gameplay

Like the original game, Portal 2 is a first-person Platform-Puzzle game. In the single player campaign players assume the role of Chell, a former test subject trying to gain her freedom from the Aperture Science facility and GLaDOS, the AI controller of the facility. Set in the test chambers of the facility your goal is to make your way through the game levels using your portal gun (the Aperture Science Hand-held Portal Device). The portal gun creates temporary passages through solid surfaces, allowing for creative platforming and multiple possible means of clearing a level. The game also requires the player to solve puzzles at times to clear sections of levels. In addition to point-to-point movement through portals, players can also utilize other means of movement of themselves and various objects. These include: using the momentum of portal movement to make jumps to open positions like ledges; tractor beams; and special propulsion/repulsion gels that can be carried or stored.

New Cooperative Mode

Portal 2 contains a multiplayer option in the form of a two-player co-op mode. This is playable both locally and online, with split-screen functionality available in local play and in select places during online play. Players assume the role of one of two robotic characters, Atlas or P-body, both new to the franchise. These two have separated from the control of GLaDOS and so must survive its anger, divvied out in the form puzzles, obstacles and misdirection. Each player has control of their own portal gun, which they use to platform through the game levels, avoiding its dangers and relying on each other.

Key Game Features

  • Extensive single player game featuring next generation gameplay and a wildly-engrossing story
  • Complete two-person cooperative multiplayer game featuring its own dedicated story, characters, and gameplay
  • Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game
  • Original soundtrack
  • A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing May 26 2011
By Elvick TOP 100 REVIEWER
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is definitely the version to get. Why? Because you get the PS3 version AND the Steam version. (Which can be played on PC and Mac using Steam, an awesome platform for PC gaming) Plus, the PS3 version uses Steam Cloud. So you combine your Steam and PSN accounts together and are able to store your PS3 save using the Steam Cloud service, which lets you come back to any PS3 and resume from where you left off without needing to truck your save file around with you manually.

It also allows you to unlock the Steam achievements alongside the Trophies. Sadly, you can't earn the Steam achievements and unlock Trophies. In a similar fashion, you can't continue a PS3 save on the PC/Mac version. It's still worth it, because you get to play Portal 2 on 3 different platforms all for the price of one. It's an amazing deal.

Now on to the game itself. If you've played the first Portal, then you know what to expect. It's more of the same at first, and then it adds so much more. For those who haven't played it, you get a Portal Gun. Which allows you to create two portals, like on the cover art. They're connected, so when you walk/fall/jump through the blue one you come out the orange, and vise versa. [there are different colored portals in co-op, but we'll get to that later]

You use these portals to get through test rooms and other environments. Not all surfaces are able to have a portal put on them, but you'll be surprised by one that can. ;3 You use them to move around lasers to light up switches, you use them to grab boxes and get them onto buttons, you use them to make huge leaps, you use them for everything.

The story is much more interesting and fleshed out than the first Portal. If you haven't played the first, DO IT. It's totally worth it, trust me and it'll make all the difference in all the banter had in Portal 2.

They've added a lot to the roster of puzzle solving tools. 3 Different kinds of gels, Orange: that makes you move faster and make longer jumps. White: Allows you to use portals on any surface that you put it on. Blue: Which allows you to bounce really high, the higher you fall on it, the higher you bounce. They've added a new box which allows you to divert a beam, which creates some nasty puzzles. There's also a pad that you can walk on that shoots you really high. A beam that makes you float and a bridge of light that can be used to walk on or block turrets from killing you.

The co-op uses all the same tools as the campaign, you're just robots instead of a human and the obvious that you're playing with someone. You can play online with friends, no matchmaking. Or you can play locally with a friend in splitscreen. I haven't been able to get online with a friend yet, but I've played the first few co-op levels alone (not that easy) and I can tell it's going to be amazing.

This game exceeds all my expectations for it, and they were very high. Valve has outdone themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Your Time Mar 7 2012
By Christopher H TOP 500 REVIEWER
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
What can I say? Portal 2 is pretty much exactly what people wanted from the sequel.

It cleverly written, genuinely funny, and offers tons of fun navigating puzzle after puzzle. It's a solid one player experience, you'll get your moneys worth.

Oddly enough though I think the multiplayer experience is where the game really shines. I haven't had so much fun in ages. The puzzles are much harder, and you need to rely on teamwork to accomplish them. If you have a buddy that plays the game, please don't miss out on it. Valve even released free DLC which added another multiplayer campaign, which was great.

Buy it, you won't regret it. It really is the rare kind of game everyone can enjoy.
