Product Description

From Amazon

Silk ribbon embroidery utilizes many of the same stitches as more traditional crewel embroidery, but the unique qualities of the ribbon make for a very different look. This beautiful book (conveniently spiral bound to lie flat when working) offers a comprehensive stitch guide and good coverage of all the basics. Each stitch is given a clear diagram, and many also include color photos of a detail featuring that stitch. In addition, Judith Baker Montano presents charming descriptions of what inspired her lovely, elaborate finished pieces, which she calls "free-form stitchery."

Book Description

Learn all there is to know about silk ribbon stitches, crazy-quilt stitches, composite stitches, and even left-handed stitches. Compact enough to fit in your work basket, the book is spiral bound-leaving your hands free to work.

Embroidery. . .the word conjures up so many visions and memories for me: crewel wool pomegranates flowing across an eighteenth century bedspread in Balmoral Castle; my grandmother's collection of tea towels, each heralding a new day of the week with precise outline stitches; the gift of a chain stitch horse head, lovingly made by my daughter in her seventh-grade home economics class; the delicate silk ribbon flowers that fill me with delight in the "Land of Wonder, Down Under"; the silver crane worked in silk by a Japanese student, shyly handed to me as I rushed to catch my plane in Tokyo; the look in my friend's eyes when I finished the crazy quilt landscape commemorating his parents; the assurance from my son that he loved the pink flowers decorating his new T-shirt and wore it anyway; the brightly colored yarmulkes lovingly embroidered by my friend for her son's Bar Mitzvah; concentrating on the priest's gold Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very inspired, May 1 2003
By
This review is from: Elegant Stitches: An Illustrated Stitch Guide & Source Book of Inspiration (Spiral-bound)
This book is not very good. It's all line drawings, some photos, boringly presented and basically an adhoc production. Boring and uninspiring. It's written because Montano in her Crazy Quilt Book (superb!) tells how embroidery is the make or break deal in a crazy quilt but this book does not live up to those expectations.

Instead try Lucinda Ganderton's a Stitch Sampler, where colour threads are used and everything is easily viewed or if a Montano is what you are seeking go for the gold and get her Crazy Quilting book, where the main stitches are detailed and her methods outlined. Just pass this one by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring stitch guide, July 15 2003

It had been many years since I learned to embroider as a child. I had difficulty finding a basic stitch guide to assist me in reviving this art in my life. This book provides not only basic stitches but clear instructions and illustrations of more complex stitches. The inspiration is in the color photographs of completed works and the valuable section on composite stitches and suggested combinations. The book also reviews the types of needles for use with various yarns and threads on a variety of fabrics. It's everything I hoped for!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Inspired Me!, Nov 25 2000
This review is from: Elegant Stitches: An Illustrated Stitch Guide & Source Book of Inspiration (Spiral-bound)
My mom bought me this book for my birthday, she said I needed to learn the family tradition of silk ribbon embroidery. Being a typical 15 year old, I was kindof sheepish about it, but as I started reading, I became captivated by it. I couldn't believe it! It was easy to read, very comprehensive (the other stitch books my mom had were hard to read and kind of boring) and fun! Each stitch is given a clear diagram so I could easily see the pattern. It was unreal! I actually liked something my Mom bought me! I have shared this book with all my friends(especially the girls, because they love guys who can stitch!) I love you Mom, kudos for Judith Baker Montano, I hope she has a follow up to this!
