By Jenny J.J.I. TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
After hearing this album a couple of times you can determine a balance of vulnerability, strength, and love captured throughout the progression of Key's fourth album. This was written during a time of intense personal struggle for the New York City songstress, and her pain is evident throughout Freedom. Almost completely lacking in some of the more upbeat cuts that buoyed her last album As I Am (Teenage Love Affair for example), Freedom is often little more than Keys, a piano, some minimal backing and her extraordinary voice, making the album the least immediately accessible of her career. This is an album that does not immediately grab you. Instead, it requires some patience, demands the listener put in some work too, but those who are willing to follow Keys' will find their effort well rewarded.

1. The Element of Freedom (Intro)

Alicia Keys does spoken word for the opening of her album.

2. Love Is Blind

Sometimes you can see the effects of loves strong hold. "Love is Blind" is the opening track that sets the bar for a soulful, powerful and lyrical album. Alicia harmonizes with background vocals and bass driven drums. Great way to start off an album.

3. Doesn't Mean Anything

"Doesn't Mean Anything" is the 1st single of off The Elements of Freedom. This track tells the tale of realizing that all your dreams mean nothing without anyone to share it with. Classic A. Keys is written all over this track.

4. Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart

You have to let the pass go and move on with you life. "Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart" is a smooth mid-tempo track with drums and electric keyboards. The drums provide the foundation of an edgy and sultry joint.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN ELEMENT OF TIMELESS MUSIC Feb. 22 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Alicia is not often described by the public at large as being "a rare musical genius" - yet she is!

While many may falsely percieve her as musically high brow, she continuously remains very contemporary in regard to her approach in creating new music.

THE ELEMENT OF FREEDOM is a solid evolution of this artist and further evidence of her massive talent as a composer.
With this release, she has co wrote cunning pop songs that mildly mirror the vibe of an old wise artistic soul.

This impressive vocalist, lyricist and composer can constantly create new material that is addictive and melodically refine.

THE ELEMENT OF FREEDOM is a superb collection of songs appearing familiar within the first five minutes of auditioning them.

The musical production and her vocals on this CD perfectly support her elegant and meticulously crafted pop songs.
This is not your typical disposable current pop release - it is intelligent and timeless music.

The material is very radio friendly while pleasantly not catering to a lower standard set by the majority of current pop releases.
With the release of ELEMENT OF FREEDOM, Alicia further cements the concept within the public that she is not to be classified amongst pop artists such as Rihanna and or Lady GaGa but worthy of being regarded amongst timeless artists such as Brenda Russell.

ELEMENT OF FREEDOM is definitely worthy of being immediately added into your own personal pop music library.

This is not a review on the record itself.

I would just like to say that I am displeased with the way Amazon ships its records.
Mine was shipped in a rectangular box that was too small for the record but it was squished flat to the bottom of the box, with bubble wrap on top. When I got the record out it was bent pretty bad on one corner and it was warped with a curve in the middle from being in a box that is slightly too small.
I have read many reviews on Amazon before about this happening but I thought I would try my luck anyway. I have bought a few records off of Amazon now and luckily they weren't warped before, but now that it's happened to me, I thought I would chirp about it here. I thought they were probably isolated cases but it seems it happens a lot. It really sucks to get a warped new record in the mail. What I would like to see is a more appropriate sized shipping box, like a thick, flat one with the record card-backed on both sides, even with a fragile sticker where appropriate. That way we would get a nice flat record with nice sharp corners!
I guess the record will play ok (I opened the box just now), but who wants to pay the cost of a BRAND NEW record and receive a WARPED one with BENT CORNERS???!!!
Even though I might pay a little bit more, I think I will be ordering from my local record shop from now on, unless Amazon changes its shipping methods. It shouldn't be that hard, I've seen the right sized boxes at Office Depot and such.

Sorry for the 1-star review Alicia Keys fans, but you should know I am a huge fan as well. I think she is one of the most beautiful, talented artists out there, period...just for the record. ;)
