Review

"Llewellyn skillfully and poignantly reveals the complications and evasions of the characters' relationships . . . Eleven is a compulsive read, and I devoured it in one sitting, unable to put it down . . . It's easy to imagine this becoming a cult book for the disillusioned younger generation . . . who will recognize many of the characters and situations."  —Ray French, author, All This Is Mine and The Red Jag

"A micro-mezze of human emotion, Eleven thrusts snippets of love, trust, and disappointment into the mix and proves that the knock-on effects of petty office politics can be disastrous."  —Gay Times

Product Description

Told entirely in e-mails sent and received by Martin Davies, would-be author and frustrated corporate accountant, this debut novel is set on September 11, 2001, in Cardiff, Wales. In denial about his breakup with his girlfriend and baffled by the triviality of his life, Martin gossips online at his desk and makes plans for the weekend until—just after his crowd of young professionals returns from lunch—people start flying airliners into office buildings in New York City. Very funny and then brutally sad, Martin's messages by the time the day is over have run the gamut from nonsense straight out of The Office to something closer to a play by Samuel Beckett.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, thought provoking little book, Jun 21 2009
By sb-lynn - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Eleven (Paperback)
This short little novel is epistolary - it is told entirely by means of emails both to, and from, a young man named Martin Davies. Martin is an process accountant, and he is bored and vexed with his job. He is a frustrated wanna-be author to boot.

Martin works in Cardiff, Wales, and the book (and emails) all take place on one day - September 11, 2001.

Especially at the beginning, the emails are just hilarious, and reminiscent of scenes and characters from the movie Office Space. Martin also writes quite a few "saved drafts", where he is saying what he really wants to say to his bosses, and at times, to his "friends".

What makes this novel so interesting, is that you see Martin gradually start to fall apart, as his frustrations grow, and the news about the events in New York (effecting everyone) start to bring it all to a boiling point.

Certainly we all remember that day, and how the world, our outlook, and our priorities seemed to change. Especially on that very day, and the immediate aftermath.

This is a very quick read - you can easily read it in an hour or two. As slight as the book is in size, it is provocative and will make you both laugh, and lament at Martin's life, and perhaps, our own.

Recommended.
