From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. This light novel, which opens with an eleventh birthday and ends with a twelfth, recounts narrator Winnie's year as she reluctantly grows apart from her best friend, Amanda, and grows closer to Dinah, a girl she previously pitied. Her disappointment when Amanda becomes occupied with fashion and boys and finds a new best friend is deftly portrayed, as is Winnie's increasing respect for the awkward but kind Dinah. The stilted structure of covering one month per chapter, each with a main episode, creates a choppy pace that detracts from the effectiveness of an otherwise enjoyable read, but all three girls, and Winnie's sulky older sister, come across as fully rounded characters that interact in believable ways. Book Description

Starting with her birthday in March, every chapter brings a new month and a new event in Winnie's life.  From surviving her teenage sister's grumpy mood swings in April to dealing with prissy new rival Gail Grayson in September, there's a calendar full of ups and downs of being eleven years old.  Especially hard for Winnie is the growing distance between herself and her best friend, Amanda, as both girls grow into different social circles.  The big and little moments of Winnie's year are captured with honesty and warmth, and her sharp observations and infectious enthusiasm make for hilarious storytelling.  Eleven-year-olds of all ages will discover themselves in this winning young heroine on the brink of adolescence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, heartfelt read, Mar 26 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Eleven (Hardcover)
Lauren Myracle has a way of understanding relationships; how they work, what hurts, what brings laughter. This captures relationships at that moment when everyone is changing --but changing to different degrees and in different ways. It's a compelling, fun, silly and serious book, and I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story about evolving friendships, Mar 14 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Eleven (Hardcover)
I enjoyed reading about Winnie and her life experiences. It really made me remember back to my childhood, and my 5th-6th grade years in school. Those can be really difficult times. I think that readers can really relate to Winnie and both the good and difficult times that she experiences. I enjoyed the interesting stories and adventures that happen to Winnie each month of her 11th year of life. As an elementary school teacher myself, I would highly reccomend this book to my students. It can really help students understand how relationships do grow and change over time.
