She lives for passion.
Bold, impulsive, and a magnet for trouble, Juliana Fiori is no simpering English miss. She refuses to play by society's rules: she speaks her mind, cares nothing for the approval of the ton, and can throw a punch with remarkable accuracy. Her scandalous nature makes her a favorite subject of London's most practiced gossips . . . and precisely the kind of woman The Duke of Leighton wants far far away from him.
He swears by reputation.
Scandal is the last thing Simon Pearson has room for in his well-ordered world. The Duke of Disdain is too focused on keeping his title untainted and his secrets unknown. But when he discovers Juliana hiding in his carriage late one eveningrisking everything he holds dearhe swears to teach the reckless beauty a lesson in propriety. She has other plans, however; she wants two weeks to prove that even an unflappable duke is not above passion.

Disappointing,
By PLB (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eleven Scandals To Start To Win A Duke's Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
A word of warning about this review ... Before I bought the book, I googled it, and the reviews I found were very favourable, so my impression is not one that everyone shares, and you may want to look at those reviews as well.Having said that, I found this book to be very disappointing. I enjoyed the first two in the series ("Nine Rules ..." and "Ten Ways ..."), and would not hesitate to recommend either of them to anyone who loves traditional regencies, so I was looking forward to this one but, unfortunately, it struck out on all counts - the underlying scandal (that of Leighton's sister) is way overblown, Leighton himself is one of the more dismal characters I have run into in awhile, there really isn't any plot to speak of and, without plot, I want humour in my regencies, and this one doesn't have that either.

As awesome as pie straight from the oven, but twice as hot!,

This review is from: Eleven Scandals To Start To Win A Duke's Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
Let it be known that Sarah MacLean is Queen of Romance! Nine Rules was an infatuation and Ten Ways really swept me away, but Eleven Scandals is in a whole other level of LOVE that I'm pretty sure that I'm still floating on Cloud 9 after weeks upon finishing it. I didn't think it was possible for Ms. MacLean's romances to burn any hotter, but holy fried-Twinkie-on-a-stick, the temperature of Eleven Scandals most likely rivaled the Sun's!I was surprised to see how hard I fell for this new couple since the Duke of Leighton proved himself to be a right bastard by the end of Book 2 and Juliana didn't really have much pagetime in the first 2 books! Simon still was a bit of a pompous jerk at first, but once the spotlight shone on his inner conflict between his upbringing and his desires, he has to be one of my absolute favorite male characters! Watching the Duke carry the weight of reputation and family scandal was fascinating - and he definitely redeems himself after giving us a poor impression in Nine Rules and Ten Ways. Juliana definitely sparkled in Eleven Scandals - and I have to commend Ms. MacLean for creating a character with such an adorable quirk of not quite mastering English idioms. My favorites include: "He called me a pie!" and "I would like to clean the air." Oy, it was just too cute for words! Juliana has a lot of heart, and I could not help but admire her strength and determination to teach Simon a lesson on passion and what "family" truly means. The most remarkable thing about Eleven Scandals is how it brought back beloved characters of the previous installments - Callie and Gabriel, Nick and Isabel, Leighton's sister Georgiana. I've read other romance series where prior characters make brief reappearances in the next book, but nothing of much substance. More like "hey, we're still here and together, but we've moved on and so should you." Not so with Eleven Scandals! Sarah MacLean gave her past characters an encore performance to further cement them into our hearts, which definitely makes me want to re-read the whole series again from start to finish. I definitely recommend that you don't start the series with Eleven Scandals - if anything, at least read Ten Ways first, but I strongly suggest that you read Love By Numbers in numerical order. I guarantee that you'll fall in love with each successive book! Sarah MacLean has written such an amazing series that will keep your heart nice and toasty! 23 of 23 people found the following review helpful

Review from My Overstuffed Bookshelf,
By A. Jacobs - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Eleven Scandals To Start To Win A Duke's Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is the third book in the Love By Numbers Series. After reading the first book in the series, I was filled with excitement in finding the joy in historical romance. Then I read the second book in the series and was less than thrilled. Since I had already started the series, I decided to accept the review copy and give the author another chance to wow me with the third book.Readers, this book surpassed my excitement that I had with the first book. It was a complete turn around from the second book as well. With Juliana and Simon focused on in this book, my love for Historical Romance has been renewed. I admit that I had reservations on how the author was going to make Simon a character that I would enjoy. Let's face it, Simon could be a stuck up jerk half the time, but I loved how the author sucked me into his web of love. Juliana was wonderful as well. I loved how she was portrayed and how she was able to bring Simon down a couple of notches. I devoured this book in less than 3 hours! If I didn't have a bunch of books sitting in my to-read pile right now, I would seriously consider rereading it again. If you are a new reader to this genre or are just looking for a new Historical Romance to read, then this is the book! This author has made me open my eyes to this genre a little wider and it will leave you breathless! 21 of 21 people found the following review helpful

Loved it!!,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had 4 of my favorite authors releasing a new book today, and I didn't hesitate to purchase Sarah Maclean's book first. And boy was I not disappointed! It involves Juliana, a young half-Italian, sister of a Marquess, who's mother caused a scandal just by running off and marrying her father which makes everyone doubt her legitimacy. And of course makes her less than desirable on the marriage mart, even though her brothers have acknowledged her. (also, she's a bit feisty and can't help but land in scandal after scandal) I know...sounds confusing, but stay with me! Then you have our hero, Simon, the duke of Leighton. He is what you might think a duke would be... haughty, uptight, overly concerned about his reputation and finding a bride with a impeccable pedigree. Now put this proper duke with the scandalous Juliana, and what you get is a romance that will take you on a roller coaster ride of challenges, emotions, stolen kisses, romance and tons of fun. He wants her but doesn't want to admit it. She wants him but is too proud to let him see it. She knows that he believes himself too good for her and she does everything she can to goad him into admitting he feels passion for her.And boy does she succeed! I could not put this book down and i read it front start to finish in one morning (and missed my workout!). It's a fun and entertaining read, but you also feel the emotion pouring from Ms. Maclean's dialogue between the H&H. Simon is uptight, but not so much as to make him unlikeable. Once you read how he was raised, and meet his mother, well, you begin to understand why he is the way he is and you'll find yourself rooting for him to step out of his self-imposed rules and finally reach out for the woman who has shaken his whole world. I loved Juliana. You can feel her unhappiness at being the "outsider" of the ton. She tries so hard not to be hurt by Simon's rejection of her, but I loved how her character bounces back, time and time again when the fates seem to be against her. My recommendation? But this book! You won't be disappointed. |
