From the Manufacturer

Elgato Video Capture - Capture analog video for your Mac or PC, iPad and iPhone

Digitize video from a VCR, camcorder and other analogue video sources for playback on your Mac, PC and iPad.

Transfer video to your Mac or PC from a VCR, DVR, camcorder, or any other analogue video device as a high quality H.264 file. Elgato Video Capture’s easy-to-use software assists you through every step, from connecting an analogue video device to capturing video and choosing how you will watch and share it.

There is no easier way to digitize home video to playback on your computer, to sync with an iPad or iPhone, to edit in iMovie or Windows Live Movie Maker, or to upload to YouTube.

Put family memories on your computer

The era of VHS tapes is winding down, and after three decades there is a lot of video content to transfer for modern playback devices. What’s more, any video stored on magnetic tape (such as VHS, Video8 and Hi8) has a limited life span and deteriorates over time.

Elgato Video Capture provides an easy way to bring those precious memories into iTunes or your Windows Media Player library.

Every step is made simple

Elgato Video Capture is very easy to use. The software assistant guides you through every step, from connecting an analogue video device to capturing video and choosing how you will watch and share it. The software offers a simple tool to trim the beginning and end of the captured video.

With just one click, you can add your video to iTunes or to your Windows Media Player library; you can play back the video on your computer or sync it with your iPad or iPhone; you can upload your video directly to YouTube; and you can edit it right away in iMovie or Windows Live Movie Maker.

Video to your computer from a DVR, DVD Player, or Set-Top Box

Perhaps you’ve been given a DVD from a family event or reunion and you want to share it by posting it on your website or on YouTube. Or you’ve saved some great movies and TV shows on your DVR and want to play them back on your iPad.

Elgato Video Capture can connect and capture video to your Mac or PC from any device that has composite 'RCA' or S-Video outputs. It also comes with a SCART adapter.

I didn't have experience with video capture devices prior to purchasing this product. However, after a friend reported positive experiences with other Elgato products, I decided to buy it. It's very easy to use; was converting my first old home VHS tape within 10 minutes of unboxing. However, I'd like to caution other prospective buyers that the accompanying software is very limited. It's basically a wizard that guides you through the process, but the only editing operations supported are trimming the beginning and end of the outputted MP4 file. In summary, this product exceeds my expectations for ease of use for converting VHS tapes to MP4 files.

Used this device to put a mess of home videos to digital and glad I did. VHS tapes were starting to deteriorate to the point where one of the tapes barely made the transition. In general I'm happy with the device and it was very easy to use. If you are looking for large editing capabilities this may not be for you. But a simple transition from VHS to digital and this works quite well. I would buy it again.

I strongly recommend this product. It took a minute to install software, plugged both ends to VHS and USB and was ready to start. No need to be a computer wizard to be able to digitize anymore.

The research I did ahead of time for this item pointed to the Elgato being the better choice and it was correct. This item was easy to install and just as easy to use. I've digitized many of my old VHS tapes and the quality of the final product is very good.

All I wanted to do was transfer about 60 VHS tapes to my MAC computer.
The set up was very easy.
So far I have transferred 25 tapes without a problem.

I'm very impressed with the video quality. I was supposed to be able to choose the output format but if there is a way to do it, I can't find it. I believe it is going to H.264 but it ain't sayin'.
I pulled 8mm camcorder video off my old Sony Handycam that is 10 years old. Very little artifacting even with kids running around in the video. Excellent video/audio sync. After capturing a 2 hour tape, there is about a 30 second processing phase, otherwise seems to use very few resources on my 2 year old intel iMac.

The setup is easy. Standard composite into the camcorder, USB into the computer. The software... is ok, not great. Simple, but almost too simple with little chance to change anything. If all you want to do is grab your old video before it turns to dust, I highly recommend.
