Does Nikki channel Ella?,
By Lon Orenstein "Lon" (Dallas, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ella...Of Thee I Swing (Audio CD)
If the first time you heard kd lang, you believed that she really was the reincarnation of Patsy Cline, then you won't have a bit of trouble believing that Nikki Yanofsky channels Ella. This kid is fabulous! As she says, she has has a photographic memory and photographic ear. Add to that some pipes that are well developed WAY beyond her 13 years, throw in what looks to be a well grounded personality, and you've got a star for now and years to come.I found Nikki on XM channel 70 when I heard her sing Old McDonald Had a Farm. As good as it is to listen to her voice without knowing what she looks like, I love to watch the DVD in this package because it jars my reality. Here's this little 13 year old girl who giggles through some song intros and banter, then as soon as she starts singing this mature professional diva with a huge voice and perfect pitch shows up to delight your senses. It's such a disconnect that you'll be picking your jaw up off the floor on almost every song. This is a great value for both the DVD and the CD. If you like to get in on the beginning of a new talent, get this and sit back for a thrill. Lon

A Triumph!,

This review is from: Ella...Of Thee I Swing (Audio CD)
There has never been a well-known jazz singer, including the inimitable Ella, who can improvise with his or her voice as adeptly, spontaneously, and with as much variety as an accomplished jazz horn player. Nikki Yanofsky could be that person. It's clear from the "Ella...of Thee I Swing" CD and DVD that Nikki has everything she needs, and then some, to become one of the greatest musical entertainers ever to grace our planet (OR the moon --about which she sings). On this concert set, then 13-year-old Nikki sings mostly Ella's material, while exuding the talent and stage presence of a young Judy Garland. She can paint her musical pictures with a wider gamut than either Judy or Ella, though; just listen to the segments of Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game," from her 2008 Montreal Jazz Festival Highlights video, and Aretha Franklin's "Think," from her 2008 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival Highlights video, both found on YouTube. More than a nod should also go to the musicians and arrangements on "Ella," which are superb. All considered, this CD/DVD combo is a truly mesmerizing performance by a stunningly talented young artist who has no place to go but up!

An excellent CD!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ella...Of Thee I Swing (Audio CD)
When I bought this CD I wasn't sure if I would like it that much. The first time I listened to it I liked it, but it was something that grew. Nikki Yanofsky showed her talent on this CD, the only thing I didn't like so much was how she overdid the "boo-de-be-bops" but then again, that's just me. I especially loved her track "Swingin' on the moon" A fine listen for any jazz/blues lovers!
