2.0 out of 5 stars Emma Volume 1, May 20 2008
By Pauline - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Being a Jane Austen fan I took an interest in the manga book "Emma". I perused the reviews concerning the manga "Emma" and became quite excited to read my first manga book cover to cover. I found out later that it is NOT based on Jane Austen's "Emma", even though a number of people on the internet said it was based on Jane Austen's book and then others said it was not. I found a reliable reference on a Jane Austen dedicated site that said it was not based on Jane Austen's work.

Unfortunately I found "Emma" dull and unchallenging. It was fun reading backwards, but the story seemed to lack luster. How interesting is a maid and her pursuers when all they do is have tea and go to the library. Yes, there is an elephant parade, but that just seemed out of place.

I have read that the series gets better, so I may read another one or two.

The art work makes the book worth the money; I loved the artistic crosshatched pen and ink style drawings.

Emma is a romance manga by Kaoru Mori located in historic Victorian London near the end of the 19th century.

Emma was awarded the Excellence Price at the 2005 Japan Media Arts Festival.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Victorian era romance done very well!, Jun 20 2007
By M. E. Quinn "megs" (Ottawa, ON CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Kaoru Mori's Emma story is obviously a work of love and, well, obsession. The setting (Victorian England) has been meticulously researched and so much work has gone into getting the setting, moods, and general feelings of the time into what would otherwise be just another "seperated lovers" story. Emma, our heroine, is a maid in a retired governess' house, where she meets a former student of her mistress' (William) and very carefully falls in love. Mori shows us how very carefully herself, never letting characters simply state what they feel and using the visual format to the utmost. It reminds me a bit of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, where we are frustratingly kept away from seeing Fanny's feelings towards the people around her. As this is being told in a comic format, we get to see all those tiny little details that would stand out in prose used more subtlety to build up a idea about what the characters all think - they're all sort of emotionless English, you know!

There's quite a bit of humor and release; it's not an angst-filled book, despite the main storyline. Complicating matters is Prince Hakim, a royal price from India, visiting with his entourage. There are also glimpses at the way of life for so many - the maids in William's house, his siblings, other members of the gentry and nobles, as well as shopkeepers, staff, and even different levels of maids later on in the series.

I definitely recommend this entire series to any lovers of all things Victorian and people who enjoy a good love story that spends much more time with the entire world than just the lovers. Let me put it this way - I love these books and so does my romance-story-hating husband!
