Romeo Dallaire

"Empty Casing makes it possible for others to understand the effects of traumatic stress...an encouraging testimony of one soldier's battle and gives invaluable hope and encouragement to other injured soldier's and their loved ones."

Book Description

When Canadian soldier Fred Doucette was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a UN peacekeeper in 1995, he had a premonition that this tour of duty would be different. He had been posted to Cyprus in the 1970s and 1980s, but the horrors of the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s were beyond imagining.

Doucette takes us to the heart of the conflict as the Bosnian Serb forces launch a massive, concerted assault. Sarajevo, the largely Muslim Bosnian capital, is devastated. Thousands of Sarajevans perish. UN forces, tasked with imposing and maintaining peace between the warring forces, realize this is an impossible task.

Upon his return to Canada, Doucette begins his own war with posttraumatic stress disorder. Nightmares and flashbacks plague his days and nights. Traumatized and disoriented, he must learn to face himself, his family and his army once again.

With raw emotion, Empty Casing tells the story of the making and unmaking of a soldier, and the growth of a man.

5.0étoiles sur 5 An Excellent Account of One Man's Journey with PTSD, Mars 15 2008
Par J. Guiney (Petawawa, ON) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
Empty Casing is an excellent account of one man's journey through the Bosnian War and its aftermath on those who served on the front lines with the UN. A very well written book, Fred's writing style will appeal to all soldiers past and present. He gives the "boots on the ground" point of view and does not shy to speak with his heart on his sleeve about his experiences as an UNMO and his post-war emotional struggle with PTSD. Not only is Empty Casing a therapeutic release for the author, as Fred himself admits in the conclusion, it also gives a sense hope for soldiers currently dealing with PTSD knowing that there are others out there experiencing the same emotional rollercoaster years later. Fred spares no courage in exposing his feelings towards the UN, the warring factions and the challenges he faced in the military before PTSD was truly recognized by the medical system. Fred also highlights the important role his family life has helped his treatment reminding soldiers that they are not the only ones who suffer from the effects of PTSD.

I had the honour of serving with Fred at the tail end of his career in Gagetown. Although I had heard of some of Fred's exploits in Bosnia, until I read his book, I had little idea of the personal demons Fred fought inside himself every day. Fred's courage in sharing his journey through his wars in Bosnia and within himself is inspirational and his book should be on every soldier's reading list.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Inside view of warzone., Fév 18 2008
Par Virginia Wiper - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
This is a book that is very interesting and hard to put down. Fred Doucette gives us his background ,his life before joining the army. He gives us a soldier's account of being caught as a peacekeeper in a warzone with no gun and only your wits. It is about friendship with fellow peacekeepers from other countries and how they are all trying to cope in this onesided war. Fred Doucette shows us how he lived with families and made friends and yet there is a language barrier to cope with and they all do. He also lets us know about his struggle to come to terms with what had happened after he returns home and has flashbacks to the experience in Sarajevo. It gives us an inside view of how our soldiers are treated by higher level army staff if they dare to say something is not quite right in their head. I would recommend this book to anyone to read. I did thoroughly enjoy the pace.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Stirring and Honest, Avril 16 2008
Par Jean Nelson (Ottawa, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
This memoir should be read by every Canadian since it touches upon so many themes of importance to us all--memory, family, and history. Fred Doucette offers a heartfelt, honest and down-to-earth account of the struggles and recovery of a soldier from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and his efforts as a peer support worker for other veterans. He spares no one, including himself. He is also a born story -teller and brings to vivid life the sites and people of Sarajevo in a style that recalls other memoirs such as Farley Mowat's "And No Birds Sang". This is a book to pass on to friends and family. Military families will especially want to read and understand its messages since Fred Doucette offers hope to those struggling in difficult circumstances. He writes stirringly about the love and support of his wife Janice - companion, friend and soul mate. Canadians owe a debt of gratitude to Fred and his family for all they have accomplished and for the courage and grace to write this special book.
