Book Description

A full-blown panic attack can be terrifying, whether it lasts only a few minutes or returns in waves over an hour or more. This book presents the latest treatment strategies for panic in a supportive interactive format that lets you work on symptoms one step at a time without the assistance of a therapist. The books starts by detailing the physiology of panic attacks. You'll learn how to experience the physical symptoms of panic, how to overcome the fear associated with them, and how to cope with stress and conflict in your daily life. This current edition reflects updated research and revised client worksheets that Zuercher-White used in her guide for professionals, Treating Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia.

1.0 out of 5 stars i don't recommend this book, Dec 27 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: An End to Panic: Breakthrough Techniques for Overcoming Panic Disorder (Paperback)
while i am greatful to anyone who offers help to people who suffer from panic disorder, i didn't find this book very effective. the author brings up some good points, but her approach is very clinical rather than emotional. for someone to write about panic disorder without having ever experienced it for themselves makes me skeptical of their advice. panic disorder is an emotional disorder and it goes much deeper than being able to deal with the physical symptoms of a panic attack. a major step towards recovery is understanding the mental aspects of anxiety and the negative internal self talk that accompanies it.

to take an agoraphobic to the middle of a mall and tell them to just live through it is terrifying and doesn't in any way get to the heart of what is causing the anxiety, panic and phobia in the first place.

PLEASE if you are suffering from this disorder i urge you to order an audio-cassette program called "attacking anxiety and depression" from the MidWest Center for Stress and Anxiety. it will help you understand and recover from panic disorder better than any book based on exposure therapy ever will. the founder of the program lucinda bassett (a woman who has suffered from panic disorder and agoraphobia and overcome them both) has also written a book called "from panic to power" which gives an overview of the program and offers powerful words of wisdom and help.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good empirically-based treatment workbook, Feb 23 2002
This review is from: An End to Panic: Breakthrough Techniques for Overcoming Panic Disorder (Paperback)
This is a sound approach to treating panic and anxiety. The exercises are based on the clinical literature and the author's experience as a therapist. The book is in workbook format with large pages and very long lines of text across the page, which makes reading it difficult for some clients. In addition, the client has to be fairly well educated to benefit from the text. It would not be very useful to those who are not very good readers or those who have little formal education (e.g., high school dropouts with little interest in reading). Nonetheless, the ideas are useful for therapists who can incorporate them into their work without using the text per se.

5.0 out of 5 stars TRULY AN ACTIVE GUIDE IN OVERCOMING PANIC, Sep 10 2001
This review is from: An End to Panic: Breakthrough Techniques for Overcoming Panic Disorder (Paperback)
I have read many books and seen many therapist over the last 8 years, and this book proves to place the reader in an active role in overcoming their anxiety. Not that other books were not helpful, but this one made the other books about anxiety all come together to reinforce what I was doing. The best advice is to have someone help you to be accountable and do what the book says because only practice will help you change.
