Highly implausible, prepare to suspend belief and then some, Oct 27 2008
This review is from: Endwar (Mass Market Paperback)
Frankly, this was a real let down. Although I knew it wasn't written by Tom Clancy, I thought that he would have demanded the same precision and research that he puts in his own books (given that it carries his name). Sadly, it doesn't even come close.
The book mainly deals with a Russian invasion of Canada, which could have been very interesting. Instead, the story is full of inaccuracies and half-truths. Canada is pacifist and weak, even when invaded. The Prime Minister refuses to use Canadian troops to defend Canada?!? But it doesn't stop there. In real life, Canada has a very powerful brigade stationed just north of Edmonton, one of the invasion targets. The author doesn't even mention them. As part of the invasion, the Russians plan to use two suitcase sized nukes to intimidate Canada and the US to accept the reality of a Russian occupation, otherwise they will detonate them and contaminate the oil sands. Given that the oil sands cover thousands of square miles in northern Alberta (and hundreds of miles from Edmonton and Calgary), two 10 kiloton weapons wouldn't work. Now, if the author had said they were going to use 10 megaton weapon in Grande Prairie, then maybe it might have been believable.
There is plenty of action, but most of the writing is sub par at best and seems like it was written by someone in high school. Given that Clancy's works are among my favourites (Red Storm Rising for example), this was a huge letdown.

It made good kindling..., Aug 27 2008
This review is from: Endwar (Mass Market Paperback)
Having been a Tom Clancy fan since the 90's, I was very eager to pick this book up - especially when I heard about the video game, and the setting in my home country.
What a piece of garbage. I hope Mr. Clancy is embarrassed to be associated with this thing at all. The characterization of Canadians, our law enforcement, armed forces, and people was a total crock. Yes, it's fiction, but there should be some grounding in reality - considering the only conflict the US has had in the last 100 years that we did not stand by them is the ill-fated Iraq war, Canadian snipers holding the record for long-distance kill, consistently beating the US forces in wargames such as the William Tell competition and special forces competitions, this is a slap in the face.
However...if you tear the book into individual pages, you have some nice kindling for your fireplace.

Very unfair and distorted view of Canada, April 23 2008
This review is from: Endwar (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is about a Russian invasion of Canada. As interesting as the premise of this novel may be, it is absurd and insulting to Canadians. We are asked to believe that in a world war, Canada would remain isolationist and neutral. This is ridiculous for obvious reasons. Historically Canada entered the two world wars long before the the United States did. Canadians invented the UN Peacekeeping Forces and have served on missions all over the globe, including the current war in Afghanistan. This book portrays Canadian politicians as weak and pacifist. Even when Canada is being invaded, they don't want to go to war. The books in the Tom Clancy franchaise are supposed to be realistic and plausible, but this one is an outrageous distortion of reality.
