On their 1997 release, Dude Ranch, juvenile hardcore-pop band Blink 182 tickled the funny bone with an assortment of dumb sex jokes, off-colour artwork and between-song skits, including one of a dog drinking from a freshly peed in toilet. So, two years down the road, have the band matured at all? One look at the cover of Enema Of The State, which features cover art of a tarted-up blonde nurse donning a rubber glove, provides the easy answer. Fortunately, Enema supports the humour with strong musicianship. The songs are more dynamic than those on Dude Ranch, sounding like a cross between the Descendents and Fountains of Wayne. And unlike the glut of alt-rock releases that offer one or two memorable songs, Enema is flush with instantly memorable melodies and ear-pleasing harmonies. Good, dirty fun--no more, no less. --Jon Wiederhorn

Blink 182's brand of punk is best represented on Enema Of The State, and every song here is fun, silly (except for "Adam's Song"), and hard driving, as it also is on their followup live album, the Mark Tom and Travis Show.
"Dumpweed," the two singles "What's My Age Again" and "All The Small Things" are , but the rest of the songs have such equal merit that they could just as well have been singles, plus they are distinguishable from each other. A goofily immature picture is painted in "What's My Age Again" on the protagonist turning on the TV just as the girl is ready for some sex. The immaturity of this guy is well-portrayed here.
The alien abduction/CIA conspiracies are explored in "Aliens Exist." Lyrically, there are some key lines that elicit a raised and impressed eyebrow. "Going Out To College" is sung from the p.o.v. of a clumsy geek in college: "The world's an ugly place/but you're still beautiful to me." And the preceding line is a moment of awkward sincerity: "And I'm so unprepared, so here's your valentine/Bouquet of clumsy words, a simple melody" And in "Dysentery Gary," the frustration at losing a girl to a slimeball results in the lyric: "F--- this place, I lost the war, I hate you all, your Mom's a whore."
"Adam's Song" tackles the topic of suicide with lyrics veering from serious "I'm too depressed to go on/You'll be sorry when I'm gone" to goofy "Remember the time I spilled the cup/of apple juice in the hall."
Party life is the theme on "The Party Song" and "Anthem." Shallow, false image giving, game playing, 'look but you can't touch' girls are trashed in the former to my delight. Rebellion against inattentive parents are touched on in the latter. The four bonus live tracks on this import rival the energy of the MT&T show.

ok...first off what's up with all these reviews saying how blink 182 are posers and fakes and all that crap? i agree, they're not "punk" but they're pretty damn close. anyone who's into awesome guitar riffs and a mixture of fun, humorous and [sometimes] thoughtful lyrics will enjoy this album.
Dumpweed -- enjoy songs that get stuck in your head for days and days? this song is for you 8/10
Don't leave me -- love the intro. the rest of the song is great too 8.5/10
Aliens exist -- amazing 10/10
Going away to college -- see previous comment
What's my age again? -- great song but overplayed 9/10
Dysentary Gary -- hilarious. love the chorus 8.5/10
Adam's song -- one of the most well-known blink songs. it shows a more thoughtful side of blink 9/10
All the small things -- good song, overplayed. they perform this one very well. 9/10
The Paryt Song -- you can't understand a single word mark says until the chorus but its cool nonetheless 8/10
Mutt -- the only song i don't like 2/10
Wendy Clear -- pretty good 8/10
Anthem -- good song but part 2 is better 8/10
thats my 2 cents worth. this album is outstanding work and anybody that says that it sucks and blink 182 sucks...well..FYOU

When I first got this CD, about 3 years ago I really liked it. Being my first Blink CD ever, I bought it mostly because I had heard All the Small Things on the radio. At first, I thought this was their best work, but then I heard stuff from Dude Ranch, Cheshire Cat, and Buddha and I realized that this was only one in a long line of incredible Blink albums. The real problem that I had with this album was the fact that most of the songs sound almost completely the same, with a few exceptions. I really do not see this CD as Punk, as many people label it, but more of a Pop-Rock CD. I also think this CD was ruined by all the people who heard it on MTV and wouldn't stop playing it. If you really want good, quality Blink, go for either Cheshire Cat or Dude Ranch if you're in the mood for a more punk-driven feel, or their new CD if your in the mood for something different and creative. Well, to sum it all up, I see this CD as a decent CD, but not really up to the standards that were set by their first two. Average at best.
