Book Description

Feb 10 2012 John Pearce (Book 8)
Lieutenant John Pierce has managed to hold on to his freedom - but only just.

Having been caught on smuggling charges, he escaped incarceration when two of his Pelicans 'volunteered' for service in his Majesty's Navy; now, Pierce is determined to get them back. Aided by fellow Pelican Michael O'Hagan, Pierce heads to Dover to attempt a rescue, but not everything goes quite as planned. A gang of thugs who want revenge on Pierce for stealing their goods wants revenge. Having fled to London, Pierce and O'Hagan discover that their friends have already shipped out, under the command of the Lieutenant's old adversary, Ralph Barclay. Convinced that his old nemesis would never willingly let his two friends go Pearce and O'Hagan fear that all hope is lost - until the offer from First Minister Pitt himself seems to turn their luck around. The chance of a ship and crew might be just what Pierce needs to escape his pursuers, rescue the Pelicans and earn himself a small fortune...so long as his past doesn't catch up with him first.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good story, but too redundant. April 11 2012
By Edmond G. Case - Published on Amazon.com

This is the 8th book in the John Pearce series. The series is about the misadventures of a dedicated individualist who is wrongly impressed into the Royal Navy in the Napoleanic wars. His valiant action earns a commission that he does not want, but he he is trapped by situations and loyalty to the small group who were impressed with him. While he cleverly finesses his total lack of preparation to be a Lieutennant, he keeps piling up sucesses, which thrust him into more and greater challenges.

It is an amusing story line, and the author does a good job of portraing naval life and warfare. He reveals insights about the real people, politics, and locations of the war. The only negative is that he keeps telling again what he has already told. He does this enough to annoy me. I begin to wonder if he should not have told this story in fewer volumes. Is business dominating the art?
I admire the author's research and the ability to craft a complex set of events, but it is a mistake to try to make each volume stand alone by explaining what happened in all the previous volumes. It is cumulative. Each sussessive volume contains less new material. Any reader who likes a series should start with the first volume and remember at least the broad progression of events.
3.0 out of 5 stars A one trick pony May 20 2013

First, I admit that I keep reading these books in the hope that we will (finally) reach the point that our hero's obsession with Ralph Barclay will be put paid and the bugger will die or be cashiered. It hasn't happened yet (and in the period in which the series is set a well-connected naval captain likely would not be cashiered) and probably won't. As a recurring plot line it simply has run its course and should be ended. The only reason I can think of for Donachie to keep it is that Pearce has no other reason to remain in the Navy since patriotism and a good fight have no lure for him; in that he likely is his father's son, with perhaps a more finely honed sense of self-preservation. All I can do is pray that Donachie has an epiphany and comes up with some other plot line and ends this soap opera. The writing style and sense of period are good, but the characters don't seem to learn much from their experiences, at least not rapidly, and personal growth proceeds at a glacial pace. I admire Pearce's sense of loyalty to his men, which is good in any officer, but his other virtues are more difficult to discern. So here is my plea: have something happen other than a serendipitous stroll through the Napoleonic Wars!

Like the rest of the series an easy read, turn your mind off to other things and just enjoy. Not as good as some others though
