Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Its title seems squarely in the pilgrim's camp, where much of Van Morrison's '80s music dwells, but 1990's Enlightenment offsets new glimpses of Morrison's oft-sought Avalon ("Avalon of the Heart") with darker confessions of human frailty and challenged faith. The opening "Real Real Gone" belies its hard-charging R&B verve (a welcome return to high-octane soul after his relatively becalmed, then-recent work) with admissions of weakness, and even the lyrical title song reveals confusion more than salvation. A few years later, such defeats might have prompted one of his crankier outbursts, but this set is brightened by the joyful reminiscences of "Youth of 1,000 Summers" and the epic "In the Days Before Rock 'n' Roll", in which Morrison's declamatory fervour is matched by poet Paul Durcan. The latter song is a gloriously apt Morrison moment, exulting in Little Richard as though he walked the same astral plane as William Blake--which, in Morrison's world, is exactly the point. --Sam Sutherland

5.0 out of 5 stars Introspection, retrospection and his musical heroes, Nov 27 2008

This review is from: Enlightenment (Rm) (Audio CD)
Dominated by tasteful horn and string arrangements, this appealing album was Morrison's first great achievement of the 1990s. It has now been enhanced by the addition of a second version of the title track and So Quiet in Here. Van as Fan comes to the fore on the great 9 minute track In The Days Before Rock n Roll, an intelligent & absorbing reflection on his musical heroes.

There is plenty of modal & tempo variation. The tuneful Real Real Gone is catchy & rhythmic, the tender gospel song See Me Through is a stirring highlight whilst the exuberant Youth Of a 1000 Summers, a serenade to the "sweet bird of youth" is another true gem.

The music is accessible and melodious with definite pop appeal. Morrison pays tribute to his influences, many of which were American soul singers. Enlightenment is a soothing & introspective album where tasteful excursions into jazzy realms add a special touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure JOY, April 25 2003

This is my favorite album - PERIOD. When I need to reconnect, this is the CD I play. "Youth of 1,000 summers" may be the best, most joyous psalm that I have ever heard. Makes me weep and dance at the same time.

I first heard "Days before Rock n Roll while driving to a job interview. Before that I had no interest in Van as an artist. I bought the cd the day after, and never regretted it. Although I have virtually all of his "newer" stuff this cd is a standout. The same can be said of "Hymes of Silence." These are classics that should be in everyone's library. The title by the way is based on one of many surveys I have seen
