Newfoundland country crooners the Ennis Sisters--Maureen, Karen, and Teresa--might be marketed as eastern Canada's version of the Corrs, complete with a come-hither cover shot on 2001's
Ennis Sisters, but give them some credit for sticking close to their roots. The trio's major-label debut was written by Maureen rather than a team of songwriters, and eschews a slick sound for a more rootsy, folk-pop twang. The songs themselves are smooth, radio-friendly ballads, but the catch here is the Sisters' vocal harmonizing. which, on songs like "Turn Up the Radio" and "October Wind," lift the material above the saccharine. --Matt Galloway
