4.0 out of 5 stars A light book about a heavy workout, Dec 26 2008

This review is from: Enter the Kettlebell!: Strength Secret of the Soviet Supermen (Paperback)
I ordered this book after purchasing a kettlebell and watching a few youtube workout routines, but didn't get around to reading it until a month after starting a class with a certified instructor. Given the importance of form in many kettlebell exercises, it's tough to master some of the moves through just reading a book or watching a video. I easily got through the book during a three hour flight as there are lots of illustrations and fairly sparse, simple text. While the explanations of the individual exercises were quite clear, the overall workout regime description seemed excessively complex. The 'comrade' gimmick does get a bit tiresome.

You'd probably be best off doing a few classes with a good instructor (mine did her certification with Pavel). The book may prove to be a handy reference, but anyone who isn't athletically gifted will benefit from more than written directions.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Intro, May 12 2011
This review is from: Enter the Kettlebell!: Strength Secret of the Soviet Supermen (Paperback)
This is a nice introduction to the art of kettlebell lifting, but it is by no means a manual for the serious weightlifter. It is mainly comprised of the kettlebell's history, the making of a kettlebell, and a few didactic explanations of a few of the key kettlebell exercises. There are better, more detailed tomes in existence for the serious kettlebell enthusiast. My personal recommendation would be "Kettlebell Training For Athletes" by Dave Bellomo. It is geared for getting the beginner up to speed with an eight week training schedule, and goal-specific routines for sportsmen, martial artists and law enforcement.

Again, "Enter the Kettlebell" by Pavel Tsatsouline is a good introduction, but should not be a sole source of information on kettlebell training.
