Book Description

Nov 22 2011 Need
Zara and Nick are soul mates, meant to be together forever. But that's not exactly how things have worked out. Nick is dead - supposedly taken to some mythic place for warriors called Valhalla, where Zara and her friends might be able to get him back. Bedford needs its warriors more than ever, since a group of evil pixies is devastating the place. But even if Zara and her friends can reach Valhalla, there's that other small problem: Zara's been pixie kissed. Will Nick even want to return with her? Especially since she's not just any pixie. . . . She's Astley's queen.<BR>

'Carrie Jones is the real thing: a talented author. Her detailing is exquisite, her powers of observation, superb' Tim Wynne-Jones, author 'If you asked Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer to co-author a book, they would come up with Need' Justine magazine 'Entice is my favourite out of the three Need books - the stakes are higher, the action is so much more intense' Writing From The Tub 'Original and riddled with Norse myth, which I love. Story/Plot: The plot development in this story is good and interesting. There were some moments, however, that I found myself a bit bored...like the story got a bit dull for my liking. But, for the most part, I was interested in the story and wanted to keep reading. One thing that really bothers me is that I feel that things/ideas in this series are not fully explained. If I were Zara (the narrator), I would be asking waaaay more questions. It seems like the narrator is content with merely knowing basic facts, with no further explanations needed. This bothers me...I constantly find myself craving more information. For example, after reading the third book in the series, I still feel as though I barely know anything about pixies, and yet the narrator is a pixie! What's up with that??

Characters: The characters are mostly the same in this novel as the previous two, minus one main character...which you know if you read Captivate. There is a sense of a possible love triangle blooming, which typically I don't like. But, it is very subtle and I won't say if anything is actually going to come of it. The love triangle is also done a bit differently than normal, as one angle of the triangle is not around.

Writing: Writing style is still not satisfactory to me...it's still a bit weak. However, I am finding less and less mistakes and I am able to become enveloped by the story, which is good.

Uniqueness/Creativity: The creativity and uniqueness is about on par with Captivate. Some aspects I am impressed with, others not so much.

Overall: I don't think I've mentioned anything yet about the covers of these books in either of my previous reviews of the first two books of the series. So, I figured I should comment on them now. I love the covers. I think they are are all beautiful and make me interested in reading the books. However, the covers are a bit deceiving...I would say that the covers are overall more interesting than the actual story. Not that the stories aren't good, just not my favourite. I love the covers though. Overall, this book was decent. It held my interest. But, again, the writing quality is not up to par with what I expect from an experienced writer.

I'm not one to read Fey books, but this one had a decent enough rating on GoodReads so as soon as I saw it sitting on the library shelf I had to pick it up.

Zara's mom sends 16 year old Zara to live with her stepfather's mother in Maine. Ever since her stepfather died of a heart attack right in front of her she hasn't been the same. Citing a list of phobias whenever she's feeling particularly emotional her thought turn to the list to distract herself.

Much like a plot that lines up with Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, Zara is the new girl in town and also catches the eye of residential hottie, Nick. With the whimsical thoughts of a teenage girl that screams how "hot" her crush is, the writing is fluid, a little corny and an entertaining read.

Filled with feys, werewolves, and other paranormal creatures of the sort, Need captured my attention and gave me an entertaining read to begin my journey into the pixie world.

I always love it when the damsel in distress becomes the hero. Zara - who has shown her inner strength, but has ultimately needed to be protected in the past - is now one of the protectors. She can now fight along with her allies and go out in search of her lost wolf.

Zara and Astley's relationship gets explored more in this book. I was solidly team Nick for the first two books, but I grew to love Astley in Entice. The humble but strong pixie king was patient and kind. We find out more about his past and his family and the heartbreaks that he has survived to get where he is. I kept wanting to know more about him until I found myself totally conflicted over who Zara should end up with.

The war brewing in the shadows of Bedford is intensified and Entice sets up what is sure to be an epic battle in the next book. There were tragic losses and intense victories keeping me on the edge of my seat.

I was thrilled with this chapter in Zara's story and I can't wait to read the forth and final book! I'll leave you with one of my favourite quotes:

"My name is Zara White and I'm almost seventeen years old. I'm a pixie, and my boyfriend was killed by a pixie king with the ludicrous name of Frank."
