Gifted Canadian Guitarist, July 26 2011

Canadian guitarist Erik Mongrain has released two albums for the Prophase label. EQUILIBRIUM is his second. I stumbled upon this uniquely gifted musician in a YouTube video. While the two-hand tapping technique was not originated by Mongrain, he uses it to marvelous effect on these nine instrumentals.
The inclusion of Michael Manring on fretless bass on two tracks ("Alone in the Mist" and "Maelstrom") is a logical pairing. Manring toured and recorded extensively with Michael Hedges, an obvious major influence on Mongrain.
In the liner notes, Mongrain provides a brief comment about each song. Of the opening track, he writes: "I have a hyperactive mind. There is no switch to turn it off. One thought leading to another, it never ends..." That's as good of a description I can think of to describe his music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Running time - 40:27]
