Product Description

Noted artist Eric Sloane presents a rich and varied collection of American firsts—from the saltbox house to basketball, hex signs to ear trumpets, popcorn to rocking chairs. Niddy-noddy Jouncing seat Devil’s fiddle Velocipede Delightful words and even more delightful inventions, these curiosities and many others are vanishing antiquities of our country’s past of which few Americans are aware.

Taking his cue from early Americans’ interest in the lore and beauty of the English alphabet, Sloane arranged this beautifully illustrated book in an A-Z format, decorating each page with his own fine handlettering and including a brief caption to elucidate the origin and use of each object he pictures.

Eric Sloane (1905–1985) was a prolific famous American painter, illustrator, and author who published more than 40 books. Born in New York, he became interested in the field of Americana after discovering old tools and farm implements abandoned around his property in Connecticut. Besides being an authority on Americana, he was also well versed in meteorology.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful architecture matured thru centuries, Feb 10 2006
By Jim Bruderlin "cherry" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Eric Sloane's AbCs of Early Americana (Paperback)
From the basic european tithe barns and farmhouses that matured into this country's architecure and repeats it's basic load bearing beauty across our america, and is as much a stamp of who we are, as an american eagle is. To see our architectural heritage, and America being both torn down and copied, is quite moving i'm sure to a purist such as eric sloan. i have a large library of rural american country structures, and eric sloan is not only the guru of farmhouse source material, he is the only one who really knows, reminding us to get right and keep it right, before we sell our heritage off completely, as many other unique countries have done. i am thankful that he is being published again, as i have a small fortune into his old books, in trying to track them down used and rare over the years. i re-look at them more than any others on my architectural shelf. his "an age of barns" is also a must own book.

This book is very informative in helping me create an authentic early home. The illustrations by the author are fabulous. I recommend all of Eric Sloan's books to anyone who is interested in learning about earlier days and how people lived. His books are wonderful! I have learned so much from Eric Sloane's books regarding how people lived their day to day lives and what objects they made to use for different jobs. A very easy read but, extremely informative.
