5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Cast of Characters, Oct 12 2009
By P. J. Sullivan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Erik Satie (Hardcover)
This excellent biography is rich with the flavor and color of Bohemian Montmartre. Satie lived in Paris, and what a cast of characters he knew there: Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky, Picasso, Cocteau, Faure, Chabrier, Poulenc, Milhaud, Leger, Derain, Braque, and others. Here is his affair with Suzanne Valadon, the mother of artist Maurice Utrillo. His involvements with Socialism and Rosicrucianism. His poverty and his contempt for money and convention. This book is more personal than musical. One does not need a musical background to appreciate this story of the eccentric hermit of Arcueil, who became a cult figure after his death from alcohol.
