Book Description

Oct 1 2012

The history of Chinese immigration to Canada and the US over the past 100-plus years has been fraught with sadness and indignity; newcomers to North America encountered discrimination, subjugation, and separation from loved ones. As well, in Canada the Chinese head tax was introduced after the Canadian Parliament passed the Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 to discourage Chinese immigrants, while in the US, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act outright banned Chinese immigration to America. Despite such obstacles, these Chinese newcomers persevered in order to create a better life for the generations to come.

Escape to Gold Mountain is the first graphic novel to tell their story: based on historical documents and interviews with elders, this is a vivid history of the Chinese in their search for "Gold Mountain" (the Chinese colloquialism for North America) as seen through the eyes of the Wong family. They traverse the challenges of eking out an existence in their adopted homeland with hope and determination, creating a poignant immigrant's legacy for their sons and daughters.

Escape to Gold Mountain is a moving and gripping story for all young North Americans.

Ages 12 and up.

Review

This is action-packed history for new generations in which David H.T. Wong presents over 100 years of Gold Mountain stories, drawn and told with passion and a critical eye. A rousing tribute to our pioneers!
—Paul Yee, author of Ghost Train and Tales from Gold Mountain (Paul Yee 20120731)

A tour-de-force artistic and conceptual achievement that will redefine how Chinese in North America and others perceive our common history.
—Anthony B. Chan, author of Gold Mountain and Perpetually Cool: The Many Lives of Anna May Wong (Anthony B. Chan 20120731)

Escape To Gold Mountain is an important book that plays to the strength of the graphic novel form. It encapsulizes the struggle of the Chinese in North America in a sweeping visual narrative, attacking a complex storyline that takes in the opium wars to early immigration, railroad workers, the head tax, and the Chinese exclusion act. Forget Batman; Escape to Gold Mountain reveals that the real superheroes are the ones who toil and sacrifice for their families in the face of obscurity.
—Tony Wong, journalist (Tony Wong 20120731)

The First Nations people have a great oral tradition, and David H.T. Wong's comic book is a wonderful way to continue that tradition, along with his illustrations. This is a book for new and future generations that will create pride in the rich cultures we share.
—Chief Leonard George, Tsleil-Waututh Nation (Leonard George 20120731)

This book is an excellent introduction to the complex issue of Chinese immigration as told from the Chinese point of view.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stellar Graphic Novel! Oct 30 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
David Wong has created a vivid masterpiece in Escape to Gold Mountain as a stellar graphic novel. With deep empathy, he has created a vibrant journey of the Chinese in Gold Mountain, Canada and America. Future generations of Chinese, Canadians, and Americans will surely appreciate the harsh hardships of the few sojourners. The Chinese Head Tax. The Chinese Exclusion Act. The Paper Sons. Despite their tragedies and heartbreaks, the story of the Chinese is triumphantly told of their legacy of over 150 years in Gum Saan, Gold Mountain.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the complex issue Nov 2 2012
By Man of La Book - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Escape to Gold Mountain : A Graphic History of the Chinese in North America by David H.T. Wong is a graphic novel telling the story of the Chinese immigration to the United States and Canada. Mr. Wong is an Asia Canadian activist and an architect in Vancouver.

The graphic novel is laden with dishonor and misery as is the history of Chinese immigration to North America. The Chinese encountered lynches, subjugation racial, cultural and legal discrimination from both countries.

I do remember learning in school (but mainly on my own) about Chinese railroad workers in the United States. I did not realize how badly they were treated after they finished working and that the same thing happened in Canada. The graphic novel shows very clearly how badly these workers were mistreated as well as their ancestors who stuck around either unable or unwilling to go back to China.

This graphic novel is an excellent introduction to the complex issue of Chinese immigration and is told from the Chinese point of view. The graphic novels covers the individual head tax (up to $500, a price of a house) to enter America as well as the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act that basically eliminated Chinese immigration as well as other legislation, lynchings and atrocities.

The story follows the Wong family through the generations and how strong family bonds helped survive economic hardships, discrimination and rough times all around. The author used historical resources, interviews as well as family stories to tell his tale.

The artwork is simple but effective enough to convey the information presented and move the story along. This is an introduction to the complex issue of immigration in general and Chinese immigration in particular. While I don't feel I know the issue I certainly have much more knowledge about it then when I started and am encouraged to do some more research on the subject

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating tale that is well told Dec 3 2012
By Gary Mauser - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
David Wong does an excellent job in presenting a complex and controversial history of Chinese immigration in both the US and Canada. A rollicking good story. All immigrants face adversity -- both economic hardship and racial prejudice, but the history of Chinese in North America is particularly vivid. Wong's decision to present their story as a graphic novel is effective. His history illustrates how a once-despised group overcame exceptional challenges to achieve success in their new home land. He manages to avoid platitudes pity and anger in showing the role of racism affected the Chinese. I thought I knew this history but I learned many fascinating details I hadn't realized by reading Wong's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Important Historical Novel For All Ages Jan 28 2013
By Bill Lee, Author - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful book that provides rare insight into the trials and tribulations of early Chinese immigrants who sacrificed and persevered, not for themselves, but mostly for their families back home and future generations. As a second-generation Chinese American, I had the opportunity to hear, firsthand, from my parents, community elders, and others who experienced the hardships detailed in this book. For younger generations and folks from other cultures, the graphics and dialogue balloons keep the stories simple, while highlighting the dramatics.

I believe "Escape to Gold Mountain" should be on the shelves in all school and public libraries. Although my initial reaction to hearing of the racism and injustices endured by our ancestors was deep anger, which I harbored for many years, I hope others will read this book and be inspired by the resolve and resiliency of our forefathers when they left everything behind in China and ventured to Gam Saan. As Mr. David H.T. Wong writes so eloquently at the end of the book, "Let's share knowledge and learn about each other's history and culture so our children may enjoy the enlightened future we all desire."

Bill Lee, author of "Chinese Playground: A Memoir"
