blindsided,

This review is from: Escaping North Korea: Defiance and Hope in the World's Most Repressive Country (Hardcover)
Very interesting book if you haven't heard anything about North Korean Refugee but Very unfortunate that the author had forgotten the most critical and important issued beside the Christian and American issued in North Korea, which were more to his personal believed. The book contained Some interesting fact and journey of the author but somehow was a bit disorganised to deliver it. This book is suitable for Christian and American but not for me.

Poorly written and too evangelical makes it a distracting read of a very serious issue,
This review is from: Escaping North Korea: Defiance and Hope in the World's Most Repressive Country (Paperback)
I was very excited to read this work on the North Korean refugee situation in China as an avid reader of all things on this isolated region of the world. However, I found that the writing style detracted from the piece as it seems to incorporate an academic analysis of experts and the author's personal acquaintances with his own experiences. It is a good potential way to go about it, but I think it was carried out badly with a constant shift in tone from analytical to informal that doesn't flow well.At times it became far too evangelical for me to get through seriously. I am aware of the significant faith-based activity happening in the region to come to the aid of the dire situation of North Korean refugees, and respect the work. I'm sure some others can enjoy the multitude of references to Christianity, however, I would have preferred to read personal accounts of the refugees rather than the religious beliefs of the author. This might be much more appreciated by outgoing missionaries than academics or those interested in issues of migration, the plight of refugees or international affairs. The book is interesting in some parts, but overall it really feels like a very American Christian's travelogue that relates the experience of an individual doing some commendable work in a region that has both tragic and hopeful stories coming from some of the most vulnerable people in the world. For a much stronger analysis and fascinating read, I highly recommend "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea" by an American journalist in the region who really focuses more on the people than her own contributions.

A great read!,

A great read if you're interested in the North Korean situation beyond what the news media reports (ie nukes). Kim does a great job of making a complex problem palpable and, in many ways, relatable to the western readers. Though he goes in depth regarding the government's role in the famine and warped culture, he doesn't demonize them nor does he make excuses for them. A very balanced and unbiased look into the hermit kingdom from an outside perspective.

Unique book!,

This is a book unlike any other book I've read thus far. It gave me an insight into what refugees and defectors of North Korea face. The author offers an exciting Jason Bourne-esque feel as he assists defectors find refuge in various countries, during his four year stay in China. There is a forward by Ambassador Mark Palmer that describes the author and the book very well. North Korea is such a hot topic right now and this book informed me on important issues that can't be found in the news or in newspapers. Well worth the read!

Horrors of living in North Korea as related by refugees who flee the country into China looking for a better life. A lot of credit goes to those selfless people who help the North Koreans escape the hell of a regime run by a madman.
