An Art Masterpiece, Mar 17 2009

This review is from: Rod Espinosa's Alice In Wonderland Masterpiece Edition (Paperback)
The art in Rod Espinosa's realization of Alice in Wonderland is absolutely top notch. He has mastered a style that, while reminiscent of Japanese Manga/Anime, is uniquely his own. His greatest strength is in the concrete: in architecture, furnishings, the layouts of the gardens, etc. His depictions of faces is, perhaps, slightly less adept; the Mad Hatter, for instance, seems to be a leering Jay Leno. But Alice herself is perky and peppy and very loveable indeed; John Tenniel would likely give it his solemn approval. The writing is a wholly competent abbreviation and condensation of Lewis Carroll's masterpiece, following the original story faithfully -- until, at the very end, Espinosa sneaks in a slight variation of the "You're nothing but a deck of cards!" climax. Even purists, I think, will forgive this; it remains wholly true to the spirit of the original, and yet gives us a new twist on this ever-so-familiar story.
