It does what the title says,
This review is from: Essence Of Okinawan Karate Do (Paperback)
My primary reason for this book purchase was for instruction or guidance in Shorin Ryu karate. In that regard, I'd give the book 3 stars. Yes it does guide one through the kata, but this book is NOT up to the standards set by the Best Karate series. Best Karate is worth a near 5 for guidance in Shotokan kata. About 60% of this book is dedicated to either kata or training in step sparring. This why I bought this book. The first 100 pages could be devided into history followed by a chapter titled "Interpretation of the kata.... ". This chapter, Chapter IV is very well done and explains very well each indiviual movement found in the kata. The author explains that these movements are chained or linked together to make up each kata. Its possible that by doing this, its assumed that when it comes time to show each of the 18 kata in chapter V "Sequentail Movements of the Eighteen Kata", the detail can be relaxed. Perhaps, but I believe its relaxed too much. It appears that the author explains the movements in one chapter and shows the foot movements in the kata chapter, linking them together. Alas, the foot movements in the kata chapter are all you get. There is no "map" showing positioning nor any text even stating what the movement is. I think this is a good reference for the beginner in Shorin Ryu. As a manual to aid in the learning of the actual kata, it could be done much better. The standard set by Best Karate would allow one to learn Shotokan kata almost with the book alone; alas this book isn't up to that level of presentation. It gives you feet movements and snap shots of someone doing the kata. Not a fail, but not quite good enough. The written text of the book explains the purpose of kata and its importance. It is explained what doing these movements is for and how it is a significant part of your training but is still only a part of the whole study. This section is well written. I originally was going to rate the book 4 stars and explain how its oriented towards the beginner, but after writing the review, I dropped it back to 3. Yes, it does have that audience, I think. The chapter for the actual kata is over half the book, and this is the part that could of been done better. Yes I have learned from it. I know more now about the Shorin Ryu style than when I started, but it did not satisfy my original reason for purchase.

This review is from: Essence Of Okinawan Karate Do (Paperback)
If you were, or are a student of Okinawan Karate - then this book will be of use to you. It's great for reviewing Katas in particular - a good teaching aid.
