Yul Brynner once said that Steve McQueen could act with the back of his head. Very understated,
but compelling. Cincinnati Kid is a big-stakes poker classic featuring McQueen, Karl Malden and
Edward G Robinson, conceived long before the Internet gave birth to marathon matches.
The Getaway is more violent than I recall - I had only seen pieces in the past. Sally Struthers as a
married, but conniving, tramp is quite disturbing. Papillon, historical non-fiction, is well done but
not pleasant material. Based on the book of the same name, it tells of a tough character exiled to French
prison isles of South America, and his efforts to escape. Dustin Hoffman chips in a typical 'method-acting'
performance.
Bullitt is a classic detective story, featuring the first great car chase of the genre, not duplicated
till French Connection a few years later. Robert Vaughan is annoying as a scheming politician.
The film is more violent than you may recall. McQueen is understated, but firm for his principles. Catch his
penetrating glance at himself in the mirror at the conclusion. Large.
The DVD provides great value, even if you only have interest in 2 of the offerings.
