This is a good book with good stories, unlike todays comics theres a lot of reading, if you are interested in the Hulk or the early Avengers this is where to start. Also these stories are not dumb and written for dumb people, they are actually quite intelligent.

A good place to start Sept. 5 2012

After reading Essential Iron Man vol. 1 I started in on this guy. Some of The Hulk's origin and early adventures were quite intriguing. It didn't matter to me that it was black and white (although you do miss a bit of the flash and awe of the art with black and white). I think some of the stuff is funny (like Hulk transforming at sundown in the very early issues). The episodes with iconic characters were of more interest to me. General Ross, The Leader, and Abomination all great. I'll admit I tended to glaze over some of the episodes with lesser villains whose names escape me.

After The Avengers came out I bought this, Essential Iron Man Vol. 1 and Essential Thor Vol. 1, and if i were to recommend one, it would be Thor. Although they are all worth a read. Due to how much I like them I will continue to pick up the Essential volumes.

I love it! the story isn't that great towards the beginning though. :[ but otherwise it shows all of the hulk's history, even though there is no color.

This is good, it is sad that is only black and white, and it seems Marvel doesn't sell nothing like these Essential book in color

Not in color? A quality collection though. June 20 2012
By J. Pino - Published on Amazon.com

Purchased this for my son who's learning about the superhero genre. I was disappointed though b/c the book is not in color! How can a comic book NOT be in color? that's half the fun! But since there are no alternatives if you want to read the series starting from issue #1 I guess i'm stuck. I will say the quality of the black and white print is nice, real sharp lettering and imagery. The paper stock is good quality and not flimsy.
