I recommend this book for teaching valuable basic knot skills July 4 2011
By Robert Speik - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Essential Knots, a book by Australians Neville and Madeleine Olliffe, is a step by step guide to tying the "perfect" knot "for every situation".

This nice little book describes the types of cordage covered, knot nomenclature, the tools and care of ropes including whipping and coiling. The text, cordage, knots and illustrations are oriented to sailing, camping and scouting uses. This is not a knot book for technical mountaineering or construction, but a good introduction to the subject for kids and parents and activity leaders who are teaching valuable basic skills.

The illustrations are very clear photographs of each step of tying each knot with context provided by marine and camping gear and pleasant backgrounds. The special uses of each knot are clearly explained.
The quality hard cover book includes a bit of line, suitable for learning and practice.

I recommend this book for parents and activity leaders who are teaching valuable basic knot skills.

All around great book of knots July 8 2011
By Ski Goddess - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Knots, knots and more knots. This book has a great variety of knots for a variety of uses. It is neatly laid out with clear photos and directions. My nine year old son and I have been going through the book together learning, or re-learning, helpful knots. The rating system is helpful as my son tended to stay away from the tougher knots and was able to do most of the easier ones. On the other hand, I would try completing the harder ones. The point being is that there is a good balance of harder knots vs. easier knots.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book. It is a good length with useful knots and even comes with it's own rope.

Well-Presented & Thoroughly Helpful July 3 2011
By Kerry A. DeVilbiss - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I had the good fortune to receive a copy of this book, and I think it is a fantastic resource for anyone who is interested in knots! I was instantly impressed by the inclusion of a small strand of rope to learn with, cleverly spiralled inside the cover of the book; the material is easy to understand, organized well, with clear pictures and explanations. As an explorer of the outdoors, I always pack some cordage or rope for its particularly indispensable utility in the wild. There are more knots in here than I could probably learn in a year, and a lot of great ones. I'm a little bit ashamed to admit that I didn't know the Highwayman's Hitch until now. Good stuff.

Hitches, bends, knots, bindings, bights, lashings... this is a high-quality book with a lot of information - and clearly represents a lot of thought in its creation. I am a big fan and would recommend to all kinds of audiences - outdoor aficionados, backpackers, sailors, fishers, young and old.

Fun and useful way to learn the knots you need to know and some you can use to impress your friends!! It was a great idea to provide the rope to practice with. We have used this book to perfect, and re-remember, our knots on road trips.

It includes a piece of rope that allows you to practice the knots described in the book. It goes step by step and easy to understand the directions of typing the knots. It also tells you what each knot is typically used for.
