Review

This new reference book is valuable in its attempt to convey the real viability of Scots vocabulary in many different registers! The ideal reader of the ESD is thus anyone with a genuine interest in the liveliness of languages. Young learners will no doubt be helped by the accessibility of presentation. 4.0 out of 5 stars Say again!, Jun 9 2007
By Scotland lover "Scot quine" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Essential Scots Dictionary: Scots-English/English-Scots (Paperback)
This is very helpful if you actually read it before you go & use it while in Scotland. The first trip I kept saying, "Say again please"; second trip I said this less often; third trip I was so lucky to stay with native Scots in varied locations, all willing to blether, crack, clash. I find older Scots or those interested in the history, eager to explain & educate me in the meanings & pronunciation. This book is invaluable when reading Burns or 18/19/20th century literature. Understanding speech & meaning from NE, West Coast, Highlands, Lowlands varies greatly, so this book helps. If you are visiting but have no real interest in the Scots, then the book is of little use. I find it hard to imagine a visit without the book or not falling in love with the Scots.

4.0 out of 5 stars The only two-way dictionary they make!, May 8 2011

The 'Concise Scots Dictionary' is only Scots-English; and the 'Concise English-Scots Dictionary' is only English-Scots! You MUST get the 'Essential' one.

(But having said that, I don't know much about this other 'Hippocrene (Sc-En En-Sc) Dictionary' -- maybe that's good, too.)

I hate to admit it, and all things are equal, but you really have to say, English manufactures are slightly superior to Scottish. (I dunno, maybe they're just better at planning obsolescence (-/making it look unintentional).)
