Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In his latest work, renowned Israeli author and academic Pappe (A History of Modern Palestine) does not mince words, doing Jimmy Carter one better (or worse, depending on one's point of view) by accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity beginning in the 1948 war for independence, and continuing through the present. Focusing primarily on Plan D (Dalet, in Hebrew), conceived on March 10, 1948, Pappe demonstrates how ethnic cleansing was not a circumstance of war, but rather a deliberate goal of combat for early Israeli military units led by David Ben-Gurion, whom Pappe labels the "architect of ethnic cleansing." The forced expulsion of 800,000 Palestinians between 1948-49, Pappe argues, was part of a long-standing Zionist plan to manufacture an ethnically pure Jewish state. Framing his argument with accepted international and UN definitions of ethnic cleansing, Pappe follows with an excruciatingly detailed account of Israeli military involvement in the demolition and depopulation of hundreds of villages, and the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Arab inhabitants. An accessible, learned resource, this volume provides important inroads into the historical antecedents of today's conflict, but its conclusions will not be easy for everyone to stomach: Pappe argues that the ethnic cleansing of Palestine continues today, and calls for the unconditional return of all Palestinian refugees and an end to the Israeli occupation. Without question, Pappe's account will provoke ire from many readers; importantly, it will spark discussion as well.

Review

"If not the last word, this is a major intervention in an argument that will, and must, continue. There's no hope of lasting Middle East peace while the ghosts of 1948 still walk." - The Independent "Ilan Pappe is Israel's bravest, most principled, most incisive historian." - John Pilger "Ground breaking research into a well kept Israeli secret. A classic of historical scholarship on a taboo subject by one of Israel's foremost New Historians." - Ghada Karmi, Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, England

5.0 out of 5 stars If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...then guess what?, Jan 30 2009
This review is from: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (Paperback)
...its a duck! I know apologists for Zionism have trouble admiting that what happened in Palestine was ethnic cleansing but you cant debate historical thruths. Good book; well researched, very detailed and informative but easy to read. You dont get bogged down by jargon or information overload. A must read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An objective rewriting of Israel's version of "History", Feb 22 2010
This review is from: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (Paperback)
Mr Pappe needs congratulating for his research and writing of this piece of History. It poses the inevitable but awkward question - What did the Jews learn from the Holocaust? Israel continues to perpetuate the very crimes that were experienced in the Second World War. The tragic part is that the World (particularly the US)continue to ignore this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice of conscience for Palestine, Feb 16 2008

This review is from: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (Paperback)
Ilan Pappe's The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is a book that should have been written 60 years ago. How is it that history can be so Stalinized that to speak the truth about it is a radical act? In the case of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, the disparity between the lie and the truth is so vast that many refuse to accept even the possibility that their opinions, values, and thoughts on the matter are founded on a complete and utter lie. In 1948 the Zionist leadership of Israel expelled and massacred the native Palestinian population. For 60 years the growing millions of refugees have been denied access to their land, homes, and of course the loved ones murdered by Zionist troops, and refused compensation for their losses.

Pappe's book is an account of the "war" of 1948 from the perspective of Israeli military archives and oral testimony. It is a history of what really happened in 1948 and 1949, and the reason the "peace process" in the Middle East has nothing to do with real peace. Pappe recounts the atrocities committed by the Zionists in their zeal to establish a Jewish-only state: the terror, intimidation, murder, and rape that accompanied such a 'high' cause. It is a disturbing account of the genesis of evil (ponerogenesis) in social movements; of corruption in high places; of ruthless and inhuman behavior and a stunning lack of collective conscience.

Where did the Zionist movement go wrong? Pappe identifies the root cause briefly in a description of the callous nature of some of the IDF leaders and soldiers. He is describing psychopaths (as defined by Robert Hare, who wrote Without Conscience). When social movements fail to identify pathological behavior as such, the moral content of the group's ideology is twisted and corrupted to achieve goals the complete opposite of original intent. And the result is given perfect expression in the legacy the Zionists have left in their wake.

Ilan Pappe wrote this book because no one else did. His voice of conscience is a testament to the voice of truth and good that refuses to be trammeled by the callous and power-hungry.
