Product Description

From Amazon.com

Ethnicity finds Yanni exploring familiar thematic territory (diversity + harmony = international brotherhood) in search of fresh musical ideas. The result is career recording No. 13 (minus all those redundant compilations), which is likable though maybe a star shy of exceptional. While ethnicity is the theme, the prevailing sound is contemporary and attractively rhythmic with modest world music and classical accents. Notable are Yanni's extensive use of female voices (heard on 10 of the 12 tracks; two selections, in fact, feature straightforward lyrics) and the disc's vivid, sparkling production. Yanni offers an assortment of moods, from the celebratory, planetary-choir sound (think Adiemus) on "Rites of Passage" to pulsing, Deep Forest-like tribal chants, which sometimes click ("Tribal Dream") and sometimes seem forced, a little Yanni-come-lately ("Never Too Late"). High points are the didgeridoo-driven "Rainmaker" and the ethereal "At First Sight." Overall, the disc's sound tilts more toward the heroic than the romantic (a good trend), though some pieces (particularly his mini-operettas) seem overly polite and a little starched. Even so, Ethnicity is a compelling effort that indicates Yanni is, happily, keeping in touch with his more adventurous musical instincts. --Terry Wood

1.0 out of 5 stars Must Even Out, May 4 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ethnicity (Audio CD)
I've been a Yanni fan since I got "live from acropolis" album. I liked the instrumental music he makes. I've been to one of his concerts and loved it. Ethnicity, which I bought before hearing any of the songs, is not Yanni. Most of the songs has vocals. Which muffles the true instrumental sounds. I don't like this CD because of this...too much vocals which actually becomes monotonous Afro-Egyptian style chanting. Yanni should stick to intsrumentals. If he makes more music like these, Ethnicity is the last Yanni album I'll buy. So, if you like Yanni becaue of his style of true instrumental music, don't waste your money on this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thanks For The Introduction To Mehdi, Jun 22 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Ethnicity (Audio CD)
I've always enjoyed Yanni and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this page I discovered an artist by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After some investigation I found his site (SoothingMusic.Com) and listened to the samples...I also downloaded some of the free MP3 downloads that are available on Amazon.com.
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to his CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Yanni fan I find Mehdi to be a tad more interesting. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

2.0 out of 5 stars Leaves Me Questioning, May 18 2004
This review is from: Ethnicity (Audio CD)
Yawni (as I like to call him) was a pretty cool fella when he was dating Linda Evans and her shoulder pads but since the break-up he has gone straight down hill. As a belly dancer who once lived in Borneo, I truly love ethnic music but Mr. Yawni has taken out the city and left us with ethni which makes no sense to me.

I like the African influences and the ethereal female vocals but other than that I can find no use for this album. I can't even sleep to it because it keeps me awake wondering "why, Yawni, why?".

I prefer Niki Nana because it reminds me of my sweet ole granny with her support hose falling down around her ankles as she taught me belly dancing to the raging rhythms of "Never Dance with a Stranger" (something granny taught me never to do because men, she'd say, are like whiskey and cigarettes - bad habits hard to break). Therefore, I belly dance.
