Update (April 2015): One of the earphones has failed. I have been quite careful with my handling of the phones so I don't think this failure is related to anything I've done.
The earbuds are definitely different, since they go deep into the ear, and may be a little uncomfortable at first. But once you get them in properly, the noise isolation is awesome. The foam buds are decent as well.
As for the sound. . . there is no comparison to the cheap ones I was using before. At first, it was hard to tell the difference, but after a while of using them, I realized I could pick out every different instrument easily. There is amazing clarity to the music, and it was like I was listening to each song for the first time all over again.
That said, there is one downside to these. The bass. While you can pick out the bass clearly, it just sort of blends right into the other instruments. There is no real oomph! to it. If you're looking for some earbuds that'll reverberate bass inside your head, these are not them. However, if you're content with incredible sound otherwise, you'll be happy with these.
**NOTE**: there is a break-in period for these headphones. They sound very tinny and cheap for the first 10 hours or so at a reasonable volume. The bass levels out, but is not overbearing - a very balanced and calibrated sound. A good fit is a must, as it WILL change the perceived acoustic qualities.
edit: after almost a year of using, the right earbud isn't working anymore. no sound. though this is likely because the headphones accidentally went in the washing machine a couple days before...
overall range and true audio reproduction, these also block sounds out very good, i would recommend not using these while walking down the street because the isolation is that good. I bought them based on the reviews of many professional headphone web sites and i am not disappointed.the kit includes a great carrying case and personalized rubber or foam tips to get the perfect fit(becuase everyones ear canals are different). If you are not use to in ear canal earphones they make seem strange but you have to pushes the units well into your ear.I use these allot on airplane trips and they work better than more expensive noise cancelling headphones. If you are still using the headphones that came with your mp3 player you are not getting the full range of music your player has to offer, do yourself a favor and get these. They shipped really fast too.
I also would like to raise issue with other reviewers who claimed "no bass". That's completely false. These extend down to 20Hz (the lowest humans can hear) effortlessly. If you're not hearing enough bass (I wasn't the first time I put them in) then you haven't pushed them deep enough into your ear canal. They fit deep. I'm wearing them now and if I put my hands flat on my earns, my hands don't touch the Etymotics - they're that deep in my ears. Because of this, they give insane levels of noise reduction via passive isolation. They're not bass-heavy but when I put on a bass-y song I'm not disappointed; they're flat down low right to (and probably slightly past) 20Hz. I actually have been able to hear which tracks really do hit low and which tracks only pretend to with mid-bass harmonics (a technique many modern songs sadly use to sound better on poor stereos).
Are there better in-ear monitors? Yes. Are there better ones at this price point? Probably not.
The sound quality on these is quite good. I hear all of the instruments separately and clearly. I do personally miss the shimmer above 15kHz but many can't even hear that high and unless you regularly audition other hi-fi equipment you probably won't notice the lack of shimmer. I also feel like some transients are muddled but I expected at least that for an $85 purchase - I usually listen to much more high priced speakers (of various makes). I do find the response and clarity on these to be both quite pleasing and balanced. If I spent twice as much on this pair then it'd be a four star review.Read more ›

awful - might just as well use the basic apple headphones
I bought these and was really disapointed with the way they sound. They felt awkward in the ear. Generally very poor. Stay clear.Published 22 months ago by Christopher Coe
