4.0 out of 5 stars Evan's Ark Sep 16 2007
By Amanda Richards HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
It's hard enough being a rookie congressman with a campaign promise to change the world, but when God himself shows up before you even settle in and commands you to build a really big boat in the middle of a Virginia housing development; well that takes it to a whole new level.

Like George Burns before him, Morgan Freeman has a hard time convincing his chosen one to do as he's told, and it takes a boat load of divine intervention to make Congressman Baxter (Steve Carrell) trade in his power suits for sackcloth and get started measuring cubits.

Amidst the ensuing shenanigans and slapstick, I'm pretty sure he may have been humming the tune of "Fixing a Hole" by the Beatles, and muttering something like:

I'm building an ark ere the rain gets in
Can't keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
I'm hauling the planks that make up the floor
To keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go

And when finally the work was over, he may have been saying to himself:

I'm filling my ark in the biblical way
And when the sky is thundering
There will I go

And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong
I'm right where I belong
I'm right where I belong
Silly people run around
They laugh at me and always ask me
When the rain will start to pour

Kids will probably like this movie, and if you're an adult who can appreciate the miracle of CGI you may like it too. Funny in places, overdone in others, but with a message for taking the time for a number of things that weren't important yesterday.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Fun For The Whole Family!" Jan 5 2008
By Tommy Sixx Morais TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
After the great succes and film that was Bruce Almighty in 2003 wich i absolutely loved,i heard on the radio one day that a script for a second movie had been done and they were negociating with Jim Carrey to once again play the main character. Then for a while i heard nothing about it,until they announced Carrey wouldn`t be part of it and then i heard that it was still going to be made.I tought, without Carrey they won`t do anything good they`re just in for the money. That`s what i tought as well and the early negative reviews didn`t give much hope about the movie, even the commercial for it didn`t make me want to go see it.But that all changed when i finally watched it and gave it a chance,i won`t say its better or even close to be as great as the original was but i still had a great time and liked it."Evan Almighty" is better than most people would think it is,its funny, charming and the story is clever and entertaining that you can forget its a sequel and enjoy it.

In fact, its not much of a sequel really as there are really few things in common with Bruce Almighty.God for one is the same,Morgan Freeman plays him(and does i think maybe a better job than in the first one)and Steve Carrel(who played Evan Baxter Buffalo news anchor and a hilarious part)played in the first movie and wounds up being the main character in this one.Actually what links the two movies togheter is God mostly but there is also Evan Baxter as he was in the first movie and reprised his role wich is now the primary character, few people actually researched on it(i was one of them).Yet this one is very different and is on its own,its not overly hilarious but it does manage to get a laugh from time to time and is dramtic in latter parts of the film(much like Bruce Almighty). All that to prove its not a cheap sequel, its has its own story and all.

Evan Baxter was previously a news anchor as seen in Bruce Almighty and has changed career since(probably due to what happened in the first)and is a recently elected congress man, wich allows him to move with his family in Virginia. He appears to be a man with many possessions, good status and with his new job everything seems fine. You see he was elected in the "Change The World" campaign,God in the vein of the campaign has chosen Evan to create him an ark.Evan sees all kinds of things with 6:14 on it(his alarm clock for instence wakes him at 6:14 each day),and comes to the realization that it is related to Genesis 6:14 from the bible of course wich says "Build me an ark" and to him it makes no sense, for the moment. Then it picks up from there as God previously sent him wood and Evan wondering from who it came form met God who announced his projects for him.His words were "You want to change the world, you have the ocassion here" or something like that(anyway you get the picture),build an ark to save animals from the water he is about to unleash on September 22.Evan doesn`t take it too seriously and so God gives him the Noah look, with the clothes, hair and beard! That turns out to be a problem, and the animals that are following him aren`t too helpfull either, add to that nobody beleves a thing he says(about the date and all).If i would tell you if something does happen, that would pretty much ruin the movie for those who wants to see it.I think i say enough in this paragraph. So briefly he passes for the weird guy disguised as Noah and who seems to beleve some strange things.

Its a movie that fits everyone and that entire families can enjoy and have a good time togheter."Evan Almighty" is better than what some famous critics and magazine have said about it and is entertaining enough to deserve at least a rental. Its hard to predict you will like it,but its good and it has a good story and is a different kind of movie wich you may find great. It is suitable for everyone and it has nothing bad in it,no drugs, alcohol or anything. Its also based on the bible, that might be a plus depending of what you beleve or don`t,the entire story is based on what Noah did and God but it doesn`t stick to it that`s just the basic story and it elvoves further to deliver a good message, that message is "You can change the world by doing little things".I would recommend it,especially for a family.I could have given it a 3 and a half star,it ranges closely to that but my definative rating is four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Comedy! July 30 2008
By James Gallen TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
"Evan Almighty" is an entertaining flick in which a U. S. Congressman, played by Steve Carell, who is personally contacted by God, (aren't they all), portrayed by Morgan Freeman, who instructs him to build an Ark. That is the unusual part. John Goodman is excellent in a supporting role as the Committee Chairman who tries to use Evan's vote until Evan finally gets too weird for the Chairman's taste. Laugh your way through the rest of the movie while Evan gradually and reluctantly accepts his fate and deals with its bizarre demands. This is a great movie for anyone looking for 96 minutes of pure comedy.
