5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth A Double Dip, Mar 14 2010

I just picked up the 2 disc DVD and it was well worth the wait. I have watched the normal television series about 9 times and know it quite well. The main plot for the first 5 or 6 episodes are very much in line with this movie but there are small differences and the ending of this movie leading into Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance is very different than what is making me crave for the 2nd one all ready. The English Voice Over cast was fantastic Having Spike Spencer back as Shinji was great to hear and Allison Keith coming back As Major Katsuragi was so good and she again did a stand up job. The other VO actors were ok but miss some of those old voices. Kaworu I think was voiced by the guy who did the new voice for the re dub of Eva Platinum series so that was good. The animation looked very much the same and the added CG was fantastic and looked so good. It's hard to just watch this and say as a stand alone movie it was amazing. The 2nd disc of extra features and the booklet were a great added touch to this perfect first installment of this retelling. At the end of the 4 part retelling of Evangelion I will tell you that this was a great start and once again Funimaton did a great job.

I grew up on the original Evangelion and this remake/update done the classic series well! The new animation, story direction and updated designs give it a fresh new boost! Hopefully FUNimation decides to release 2.22 soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eva...ngelion, May 2 2010

It's good because it's true. I've been a fan of the series for years; and the remake does nothing to tarnish my appreciation. If you see this, be sure to watch it at least once, in Japanese. Original language tracks always seem to impact me more than re-dubs; and this disc is no exception. The dialogue is different, more detailed and imo better with the subtitle translation.
As I said first off, this show is good because it's true. The original creator of the series directed this remake; and his writing of the original story was born from his own life's troubling and depressing catharses. As much as the films and t.v. episodes can be taken as simply an entertaining bit of sci-fi; they (for me) will always be a brilliant parable. They're about a young man finding his own will, apart from God and all other influences. For better or worse, that is an incredibly true experience; and as a result, this film and it's coming sequels will continue to stand as something that in the words of the man himself, Hideaki Anno, "that is interesting."
