Product Description

Brutal mechanized action explodes on a grand scale as towering cyborg gladiators – the Eva Units – fight for the fate of the world in the new feature film, Evangelion: 2.22.

In the earliest battles against the monstrous Angels, young Eva pilots Shinji and Rei were forced to carry humanity’s hopes on their shoulders. Now, with the deadly onslaught of the Angels escalating and the apocalyptic Third Impact looming, Shinji and Rei find their burden shared by two new Eva pilots, the fiery Asuka and the mysterious Mari. Maneuvering their enormous Eva machines into combat, the four young souls fight desperately to save mankind from the heavens – but will they be able to save themselves?

In You Can (Not) Advance, the second installment in his four-feature retelling of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hideaki Anno diverges further from the original story line--and pushes the visual boundaries of his epic. Shinji and Rei share a more amicable relationship, but Shinji's fragile calm is shattered by the arrival of pilot Asuka Langley Shikinami. She single-handedly destroys the Seventh Angel, a fantastic creature that suggests a tarantula designed by Gustave Eiffel. This version of Asuka is even more abrasive than the original, and complains more bitterly about being ordered to share quarters with Shinji. When the experimental Eva that Asuka is testing mutates, Commander Ikari forces Shinji to attack it, even though it may cause her death. Horrified at his brutality, Shinji quits--until a new, more powerful Angel strikes at NERV headquarters. Seeing Rei absorbed by the Angel, Shinji charges back to rescue her. The power supply to his Eva fails, but Shinji forces it to continue fighting through sheer will power. It mutates into what Ritsuko calls "a divine being" that may cause the Third Impact. While the story line of the films is tighter than the TV program, it's no less convoluted: Kaji brings Commander Ikari "the Key of Nebuchadnezzar"; the SEELE cabal continues their plotting to bring about the Human Instrumentality Project, which is somehow linked to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Anno adds some new characters, notably pilot Mari Makinami Illustrious. The larger budget of the feature films is clearly evident: the backgrounds are more carefully rendered, the cinematography more imaginative, the animation more polished and special effects more special. The scenes of the three Evas running in a coordinated attack have unprecedented weight and power. The prismatic colors, thunderous explosions, and eerie lighting in the final battle show that like the original TV series, Anno's new vision will be influencing artists on both sides of the Pacific for years to come. The Neon Genesis Evangelion movies are must-haves for any otaku or student of animation, and fans can only wait impatiently until the third film appears. (Rated PG-13: violence, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

I got this launch day. Watched it 4 times in 3 days, once with commentary.
If you're at interested in the series I highly recommend it. What Mr. Anno has done with his movies is simply breathtaking. He is able to take the parts of what I love from the series and infusing it with the technological advances of today in a way that leaves your jaw all over the floor. The characters are still at the center of this iteration of the series and are equally if not more endearing and identifiable. I honestly don't have a single negative thing to say about this on blu ray other than the extras are a little lacking, but I just am left with such an intense longing for more from this series that I'm not sure they could have put enough int o satisfy me anyways.
The commentary didn't run the length of the movie which was a little disappointing.
All in all, if you liked the series at all, get this. Today.

Just finished watching and I can honestly say the graphics were superb! The best combo of CG and drawn Anime I've seen since the original, having watched countless other titles between. This storyline does diverge quite a bit from the original and if you have ever watched the original there will be parts in this movie where you will kinda scratch your head and go "wait they are already at that part where this happened??" But if after that, you ignore that thought and just let the movie run its course and watch, you will be satisfied and, like me, eagerly waiting for the concluding two movies coming soon in the next couple of years. The extras included in this Blu-ray are top notch also. I especially like the concept art segments.
In conclusion, I give the original series a 9/10 and I would give this series the same 9/10. It's like your first car compared that luxury car you buy years later. Both are your baby, its just the luxury car improved greatly what you already liked and added a couple extras and improved performance.

While it may not have the same impact as the original series did when I was a kid, I still immensely enjoy this new retelling and having since watched a great many different anime series it does still stand out quite well, I have never purchased an anime movie on blu ray at full price but this is the first time and not a single regret, the special features felt a bit lacking but otherwise the quality was top notch and that's all that matters to me.

Conclusion: Worth it, Fantastic Movie, the blu ray quality is fantastic.

Big fan of Evangelion - this follow up to 1.11 is fantastic building on character depth and storyline. For anyone new to the series, I highly recommend watching the series first for background development. The movies are a bit overarching and skip some details but are entertaining on their own. Can't wait to watch 3.33!

Excellent visuals and head turning plot twists, an enjoyable trip down the rabbit hole such that I eagerly await the next in the series and also makes me wonder what I am missing from the original series.

When I first saw this in theatres I was intrigued by the changes that had been made to the original script but I was unprepared for how mind bogglingly good this film is. Now that it has been released on DVD and Blue-Ray it's even better as you can bring that experience home. Evangelion 2.22 is simply put; gorgeous in all respects and I found myself watching it three days in a row. The CGI is tasteful, yet bold and the sound is perfect, I especially like how they brought back so much of the original cast to do the voice acting. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone, even if they have never before watched anime.

A good way to end off the series. It had a better ending than showing "mind games". Definitely a must buy for the newer fans to Evangelion, old fans may enjoy it as well.
