Book Description

May 2 2006 Dark Ones Novel (Book 1)

Paen Scott is a Dark One: a vampire without a soul. And his mother is about to lose hers too if Paen can’t repay a debt to a demon by finding a relic known as the Jilin God in five days.

Half-elf Samantha Cosse may have gotten kicked out of the Order of Diviners, but she’s still good at finding things, which is why she just opened her own private investigation agency.

Paen is one of Sam’s first clients and the only one to set her elf senses tingling, which makes it pretty much impossible to keep their relationship on a professional level. Sam is convinced that she is Paen’s Beloved—the woman who can give him back his soul...whether he wants it or not.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Romantic Romp Feb 19 2008
By Bernie Koenig TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
These days vampires are in, from the serious to the silly.
Here we have what amounts to a traditional romance novel, except that it features vampires and fairies with a bit of mystery that has a supernatural twist.

The book is fun and there are some great erotic scenes but it is lightweight. Of course, there are no pretensions that this is anything but escapist romance, and on that level it works.

So, for a bit of fun and a good romance, give it a try.

3.0 out of 5 stars What Happened? May 16 2006
By Anna Hope - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a little dissapointed & I'll tell you why. I've come to expect great things from Katie Mac- no let me rephrase- I've come to expect fantasticly huge, gigantic surprises and fun from Katie Mac. She is one of my all time favorite authors AND one of the authors that I consider paves the way for eveyone else to follow in the paranormal romance genre. Even in her romance where there is no paranormal she kicks major butt and I fall in love with her leading characters despite myself. I've always been pleasurably surprised...until now.

Don't get me wrong this story was alright, I guess. But for a few bright exeptions (yes the Butterfly World scene cheif among them) this book just didn't dazzle me with Katie Mac's usual spark of brilliance. Deep sigh. Let's hope the next Aishling Gray in Mac's series holds up.

If your still interested in the book...Paen Scott, a Scottish Lord ( who doesn't speak like a scottsman but rather an Englishman, big difference), has a lesser demon visit to tell him dear old dad, who has trod off to the forests of Bolivia, forgot to mention something. He promised to give a demon lord a statue of the monkey god or forfeit Paen's mothers soul. Obviousley Paen is distressed, especially when he finds out he only has 5 days now to turn over the statue & by the way it's nowhere to be found.

Paen turns to a half sun elf/diviner named Sam, who has just opened her detective business to hunt missing objects down. She & her lingerie model/fairy cousin are on the case. However they kind of seem to be miserably bad detectives and they also end up doing nearly every sterotypical thing they shouldn't due. Noelle from early Dark One books shows up to help interrogate a 6 armed poltergeist named Rueben & some kilt clad ghosts wander around a bit.

I had a problem with liking the main charachter, Paen, other than his accent or lack there of. He goes out in noon day sun. Hmmm, ok, let me see...oh, yeah, HE'S a DARK ONE!!! AKA vampire. Sure Christian in Mac's other books in the series could tolerate being covered up & out in the last rays of the day, but not at noon! And all the action takes place over 5 days but 2 of those are skipped through since the couple are in different cities! I just don't feel happy about this one.It lacks the best aspects of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it Feb 8 2007

Ever since Men in Kilts (and if you haven't read it, you haven't lived), I've had a huge crush on Katie MacAlister. Her characters are funny, strong, believable, and get in some of the most ridiculous situations. This book follows the same tradition, and I liked it more than most of her other Dark Ones/Vampire stories. There was a little bit of darkness in this, but so much quirky fun that I never got too scared. I felt like this was a more substantial story, and I loved Paen and his hilarious half sun elf soul mate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy Romance May 14 2006
By Elaine C McTyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Katie Macalister has given us another zany, outrageous, romantic romp. If you read her you know what to expect from her novels, a mixture of zany characters, outrageous situations, and a great romance. Mostly Fun Fun Fun! And this one does not let us down, I loved the attack of the killer butterflys, the self denying fairy, the cute monkey, and abunch of scottish ghosts, who want a real chance to swing a sword. Not to mention our heroine, a half-elf investigator and a Dark One, (vampire).

Samantha Cosse is now an investigator, the half-elf has left diviners school and opened an agency with her cousin Clair, a fairy, Who thinks she is human. She works as a lingure model.

Paen is a Dark One, a vampire, without a soul. Only finding his Beloved can get him a soul. However he thinks he is fine and doesn't see the need to tie himself to a woman he has never met. Where is the benefit to him, she gets immortality and he gets bonded to her for eternity.

SAm is hired by one person to find a lost book. Then Paen hires her to find a lost or stolen statue. Wouldn't you know it both items are on the want list of two different Gods. The action is fast and the laughs are plentiful. Sam and Paen manage to stumble from one crisis to another followed shortly by his brother Finn and Clair. For a laugh and a good time follow along with this book. I loved it. It reminded me somewhat of her Aisling Grey novels.
