Holiness. Do it yourself., April 26 2007
This review is from: Every Man's Battle: Winning the War on Sexual Temptation One Victory at a Time (Paperback)
If you wonder why so many people like that book, it is because it teaches (some) Biblical principles, like perusing holiness and purity, and that lust is bad and destructive, which are missing or forgotten values in our modern society that so many believe all the junk that Hollywood teaches us about love and sexuality. So to someone was never taught those values before it sounds like a revelation and a life changing experience.
I surely agree that purity is the right way to live, but the book handles the issue in a very naive and superficial way, suggesting strategies that most of use tried in our teenage years and they never worked. If you think I am saying this because I did not try hard enough read Joshua Harris book about the topic, or even better read a great book called "The Bible", you will find that this book is not even Biblical in the way it deals with sin. The authors say that the best way to overcome lust is to quit "cold turkey". If we can quit sin "cold turkey" then why do we need the blood of Jesus or the Holy Spirit? Well the authors say "The blood of Jesus gives you a legal right to fight sin" this is actually the only place in the book where there is a reference to the blood of Jesus, just to qualify it as a Christian book, but the authors insist that it is still up to you to get up, be a man and do it. They literally say "God will not do it for you". How about the power of the Blood to break bondages, and how about the Holy Spirit? Isn't he living in us to give us power over sin? Does not the Word of God work in transforming our mind? Did not you see or read before any testimony of a drug addict set free from addiction by the power of God?
The authors seem to say something like ... "What you get when you become Christian is a pink slip that you keep in your glove compartment thats says "Mr .... has a legal right to fight sin"
According to the author, your lustful heart will never get straightened anytime in the future, you will always lust for women like a pig, it can happen with any woman even your sister in law so you have to be careful and avoid looking at women altogether.
The books then gives a 6 weeks plan to quit lust by starving your eyes of women and after the 6 weeks you should be in total control of your eyes, but you will always need to avoid looking to them, because you will never cease to be a pig.
It will also teach you to focus all your lustful desires on your wife. By starving your eyes all day you will come home really starved so you will want sex with her every 72 hours! And she is supposed to keep with that to help you overcome lust. The best thing is that when you do that her body will start seeming more sexy to you. The author shares a testimony that when he did that, something that used to bother him about his wife's body starting looking beautiful. All of a sudden it started turning him on. So here comes another misconception about appreciating beauty and being turned on. The Author assumes they are the same thing. So according to the book beauty is what turns you on, and whatever turns you on is beautiful.
The author(s) really need to learn about holiness and purity of heart from a spiritual source before attempting to write a book to help others.
Books of real value might be "The three battlegrounds" by Francis Frangipane or "Sex is not the problem Lust is" by Joshua Harris. They are true Christian books that deal with the roots of sin not try to fix the symptoms, they will lead you to get transformed by the power of God to think differently and grow in Holiness and Christ-likeness.

Incredible Ignorance on Display ..., Jan 27 2004
This review is from: Every Man's Battle: Winning the War on Sexual Temptation One Victory at a Time (Paperback)
... starting with a title that presupposes and therefore engenders inner conflict and continues with a one-size-fits-all approach that suits a vanishingly small minority of men.
I'd give it no stars if they would let me.
Sure, it may have worked for the author, but frankly with a statistical sample of one and a heavy reliance on negative conditioning, I doubt it's real world effectiveness.
Actually, the author makes his real money off weekend workshops, it appears. Given the widespread and generally irresponsible use of mind-control technology in use at "seminars" I'd warn you to stay away from those.

Must Read, Nov 1 2002
This review is from: Every Man's Battle: Winning the War on Sexual Temptation One Victory at a Time (Paperback)
I am newly married, and naively thought that I would no longer struggle with sexual impurity since I was now married. When I felt tempted in a situation, I panicked and was left with feelings of guilt and fear and self-disgust. Fortunately God gave me the strength to reach out and countenance the problem and this book is one way he enabled me, along with church community, etc. I think many reviewers falsely characterize this book as an 8 week program or as a practice legalism perspective only or married men only, and my response is they need to read the book more carefully. Being spirit-filled is a great way to come close to God, however it doesn't give you practical applications! For example if we read scripture and don't understand exactly what it means, and we appeal to being spirit filled for full understanding, it won't magically happen (this is what exegesis is for.) For singles, what better advice than treating women as if they were going to be someone's wife, not as your joy ride in dating? We must learn discipline and train ourselves up in knowledge and truth in addition to being spirit filled, and I found this book to have a great balance of both. In addition, I found it to alleviate my guilt and free me to counter my sin and face it, to seek repentance instead of remaining trapped by it. Highly recommended for all christian men.
