A recipe from this book was printed in the Ottawa Citizen and when prepared was absolutely delicious. When I heard an interview with the author on CBC radio and saw how reasonably priced the book was I couldn't resist ordering it. Every recipe I've tried has been rich and full in flavour while not too spicy for aging innards, quick and easy to prepare, and healthy! What more can you ask for. I'm using the book more and more and have yet to be disappointed. Finding the spices was easy, either from Bulk Barn or an Indian food store and for a small investment you get a treasure-trove of flavours. If you like Indian food, you'll love this book.

Healthy, Easy, but not Delicious,
This review is from: Everyday Indian: 100 Fast, Fresh and Healthy Recipes (Paperback)
I have watched Bal's show on Food TV: THE SPICE GODDESS, and was very excited to finally see some Indian cooking on television. I enjoyed her simple, healthy approach to this potentially overwhelming cuisine. Since I loved the show, I bought "Everyday Indian".While I enjoy the basic elements she includes to introduce one to Indian cooking (e.g. spice mixes like Garam Masala, or paneer) that I have found overlooked in other Indian cookbooks, I have not enjoyed the taste of some of her recipes. For example, the Traditional Potato Curry, was too tangy because of the yogurt (perhaps it would have been better with the buttermilk her mother typically uses); and the Sweet Potato/Yam Soup lacked depth of flavour. I also tried her No Butter Chicken, and actually found I preferred the healthy version 'Better Butter Chicken' from the TV show and cookbook "Eat, Shrink, and Be Merry." She says she grew up vegetarian and had not tried many of the meat dishes often, so she asks for reader input...but as the reader, and someone who is only learning about Indian cooking, I would like the recipes I try to already be perfected. I will keep trying her recipes, but I may have to revise some of them as I cook.

Very good cookbook, focusing on healthy East Indian cuisine. Rather than cream in butter chicken, the recipe uses low-fat yoghurt. We have enjoyed quite a few dishes from this book, and look forward to trying many more. The butter chicken is especially delicious!
