For Eric Akis, becoming a slow cooker convert was no easy task. As a professionally trained chef and accomplished food writer, the idea of throwing everything in a pot and leaving it for 8 hours seemed like a cop-out. All it took, however, was one recipe to see the benefits of this everyday appliance. Filled with delicious slow cooked main dishes and perfect sides to go with them, Everyone Can Cook Slow Cooker Meals is the must-have accompaniment to any slow cooker.
Get out your slow cooker and make dishes like:
-Spiced Yam and Red Pepper Soup with Yogurt
-Snapper Veracruz-style
-Durban-style Chicken Curry
-Sake Soy Short Ribs

Disappointing,
By
This review is from: Everyone Can Cook Slow Cooker Meals (Paperback)
The goal of this book is to provide the slow cooker with a much needed makeover, creating recipes that are contemporary and appealing for today's cooks. Unfortunately this book has not made me a slow cooker convert. Overall I was disappointed in the results of the recipe tests. A lack of flavour was a recurring issue for me with almost every dish I tried, and truthfully I expected more. The addition of a dedicated side dish section is an idea which I appreciate and applaud. I think the recipe selection was contemporary and fresh, steering away from the stodgy slow cooker meals that stereotype this type of cooking method. Visually I like the layout of the book, all of the sidebars and tips organized in a reader friendly way. It holds a very clean, fresh look with appealing photographs that showcases the food beautifully. Bummer about the recipes falling short.

No-fail delicious meals. Thank you for making me love my slow cooker again!,
This review is from: Everyone Can Cook Slow Cooker Meals (Paperback)
I'll be honest. I got my slow cooker 7 years ago as a gift, and never used it much. Books I've used (in the past) resulted in unappetizing, dry, bland dishes which was a waste of time and food. I was intrigued with the positive review of this book in our city newspaper this year. I decided to order the book, and have not regretted it since. The author uses the slow cooker properly, and instructions are clear. I love the pictures, the variety of dishes, tips for substitutions and alterations, and the added section on suggested side dishes to accompany the main slow-cooker dishes. I've gone through 1/3 of the recipes so far, and every one of them have been incredibly delicious and flavorful. Thank you for making me love the slow cooker again. I've been suggesting this book to a lot of friends and family with slow cookers. If any one of you are planning to get someone a slow cooker as a gift, this is a wonderful accompaniment. The only mild negative I have to comment on is the binding of the book makes it hard to keep the book open.

I wish I had had the opportunity to view the contents of this book before purchasing it. The title, "Everyone Can Cook Slow Cooker Meals" is misleading, as is the sub-heading on the cover, "recipes for satisfying mains and delicious sides". Yes, there are recipes for side-dishes - in fact they take up about one-third of the entire book - but they are NOT slow-cooker recipes, and they are not particularly original. I did not need to purchase another cookbook containing recipes for "buttermilk biscuits" or "roasted garlic bread". The book is visually pleasing, with lots of full-colour photoes; unfortunately it is a book to be read and looked at, not one to be cooked from. The slow-cooker recipes look tempting, but the book will not lie open while the cook attempts to follow them. I do hope to try a few of the recipes, if I can find a heavy piece of glass to keep the pages open during the process.
