Product Description

Review

“A bold, terrifying read that goes down smooth thanks to a crisp infusion of humor. Thanks to this book, I can now aspire to dying in cooler ways than I ever thought possible. F**k you, old age. I’m holding out for a megatsunami.”
—Daniel H. Wilson, author of How To Survive a Robot Uprising

“The book is proof that the ridiculous and the horrible are joined at the hip and will never be separated; in a universe that seems to continually be thinking up new ways to kill us, Brockway knows there is but one rational response: to point at it and laugh.”
—David Wong, author of John Dies at the End

“There has never been a hipper Prophet of Doom. Irreverently entertaining and terrifyingly accurate, the probability of our future death has never been more fun.”
—Michael Largo, author of Final Exits: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die

“This book is hilarious. As if I wasn't already afraid the leave the house. What's that? Brockway suggests the apocalypse doesn't knock? What if I cower under a desk? Well, damn. I might as well have another nacho.”
—Garth Sundem, author of The Geeks’ Guide to World Domination

5.0 out of 5 stars If you need a laugh, this will do it . . ., Feb 26 2011

Now you might be laughing hysterically, as the topics covered are scary. The author is quite colourful and turns what would otherwise be a frightening read into something that can give you a laugh after a bad day in the office or an afternoon stuck in traffic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for anyone who even pretends to care about living., Mar 30 2010

Are you tired of the media's ill-educated hysterical fear-mongering? Would you prefer accurately researched terrifyingly funny fear-mongering? This book is a must-have for anyone who even pretends to like laughing or "staying alive." It'll also make make you look incredibly smart and witty when these subjects come up in conversation, which they will, and people will welcome the moment of humor while running from the unkillable plant monsters.

It combines real research with humor, telling stories of the Russian who single-handedly saved the world, the real revenge of the robots, the immortal Highlander of infectious bacteria, and all manner of other incredible things in fast, funny, bathroom-break-sized chunks. A perfect gift for anyone who likes to sound smart, cares about the environment, or cheers while watching Armageddon - basically the entire intellectual spectrum. Of course, you'll have to "test" it by reading it yourself first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start building a bunker. Right now!!, April 14 2010

Name 5 ways we're all going to die. Do it! Right now! Before reading this book I knew of maybe three ways: asteroid, war, or plague. Wait, four--global warming. Robert Brockway details, like, 20, and each one scares you more than the last. I've learned way more about killer volcanos, super hurricanes, and killer robots than I ever actually wanted to know, but at least all this fear-mongering put a smile on my face. So buy the book, get informed of all ways everything and everybody wants you dead, and come join me in my bunker. I have nachos!

This book is amazingly crammed full of information. My favorite part is the Verneshot. Read this, and you will learn a lot more about the world than by reading the newspaper or watching tv. Some parts are genuinely scary. I feel like there's a 50% chance we will unleash a terrifying virus or disease on mankind based on the ridiculous science experiments Brockway describes. It's fine abstractly, but think about what that will actually be like. How do you cope when you're reading this before sleeping? Luckily, you laugh. Buy this book!

Fans of Cracked.com (undoubtedly, a large percentage of you) will enjoy this book. The format is similar to many of the articles on the site, but more in-depth. It doesn't come off as expanded just to fill pages, however. The information is presented as concisely as possible, while still retaining all of its humor and sarcasm. The selected bibliography provides a starting point for further research into any of the topics that catch your interest, instead of just typing "robots are going to kill me" into Google.
