'An utterly compelling adventure story' TELEGRAPH & ARGUS

Book Description

While on an expedition to Peru, archaeologist Dr. Henry Conklin makes several startling discoveries. High amid the snow-capped Andes a mysterious mummy is found hidden in a cave. And deep in the sweltering jungle below, the remains of an ancient Incan city hidden from human eyes for centuries is unearthed.

Nestled between two soaring peaks, this mysterious ancient territory called the Cloud Ruins has remained undisturbed for centuries, protected by ingenious traps that only the most clever and courageous dare to maneuver. But where the perilous journey inward ends—in the cold, shrouded heart of a breathtaking necropolis—something else is waiting for Conklin, his nephew, Sam, and their exploratory party. A thing created by Man, yet not human. Something powerful . . . something astonishing . . . something terrifying. And now their amazing adventure of discovery has been transformed into the ultimate challenge: survival.

Don't miss this classic James Rollins novel, set deep in the mysterious jungles of South America!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good adventure story, Dec 13 2002

This is good escapist fiction. The four stars are not meant to indicate this is in the same class as Delillo or Pynchon. Rather, they are for keeping me up late turning the pages to see what happens next. Like Subterranian, this book really kept my attention with a strong action driven plot and a lot cool, trippin ideas. The characters are not cardboard cutouts but character development is secondary to and encapsulated in the fast pace of the narrative. If you like action, science/ speculative fiction and can suppend your disbelief you'll probably like this. If you are looking for navel staring introspection look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones meets X-Files, Aug 20 2002

This review is from: Excavation (Mass Market Paperback)
Excavation is a very fast read, grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. This is my first James Rollins book and I was very impressed. The story and characters hold up well, and yes I do believe the catholic church is arrogent enough to TRY to bring about the second coming... The only problem I had with the book was that the climax was too short, it was almost like Rollings had just so many pages to work with, because the book just ended. But the last couple of pages are very interesting. Leaves you thinking, Could this book be the first of a series? Now if you liked Raider's or the X-Files you will enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars read worse and certainly better..., July 8 2004
This review is from: Excavation (Mass Market Paperback)
Some reviewers found this book hokie. Usually this type of book is. A good writer though, can make even a hokie book seem just a little believable. James Rollins didn't do that here. The dialogue wasn't great and often redundant. I got thru it though. Just accepted it as something quick and easy to read in spite of unbelievability. You know.... like much Science Fiction!
