Product Description

In Excuses Begone! Dr. Wayne W. Dyer reveals how to change lifelong, self-defeating thinking patterns that prevent you from living at the highest levels of success, happiness, and health. You may know what to think but find it terribly difficult to change thinking habits that have been with you since childhood. This business of changing habituated thinking patterns is really the business of eliminating the same old tired excuses. When you eliminate excuses that explain your shortcomings or failures, you'll awaken to your infinite possibilities. Removing the excuses involves examining these thinking habits under a new and truthful light. In this groundbreaking work, Wayne presents a compendium of conscious and subconscious excuses employed by virtually everyone, along with a new paradigm that guides you to put those excuses to rest once and for all. You'll learn to apply specific questions to any excuse, and then proceed through the steps of the Excuses Begone! paradigm. The old habituated ways of thinking will melt away as you experience the joy of releasing excuses and the absurdity of hanging on to them. There are no excuses worth defending ever, even if they've always been part of your life. This book represents Wayne's effort to help anyone whose self-defeating thoughts are persistently present, learn how to discard those old thinking habits, and discover the infinite possibilities of life!

Dr. Dyer is appealing as a personality, coming across on PBS and elsewhere as warm, intelligent, and wise; a definite father-like figure who can speak very well publically.

However, in terms of content, "Excuses Begone", does not stand up to scrutiny. It alls SOUNDS good -- counter our tendency to make excuses and place limitations on ourselves by using affirmations and imagery to reduce those limitations. However, like most of the self-help genre, it offers promises to those most vulnerable WITHOUT demonstrating scienfically that this self-help program ACTUALLY WORKS. (He does refer to tangentially related research and theorists but there is no evidence I could find that THIS program actually works.) Rather, he appeals to vague spiritual notions ("source"), common sense, and testimonials -- most noteably his own experience -- to suggest that his program will transform your life.

Dr. Dyer -- and many others -- promise readers/viewers the moon (and stars) but individuals are told to suspend their skepticism and just believe. While he likely believes what he is selling to be of value, there is no evidence of it (other than a temporary "feel good" effect, which may in fact turn into negative feeling when an individual realizes nothing has changed). Rather, he -- and many others -- are selling hope for those looking for it.

I particularly am leary of his dimissing individuals' financial limitations; those who say they cannot afford to buy his materials are informed to believe that "abundance is mine" (i.e., that if they have sufficient belief, they will somehow come up with the money for his materials -- and eventually, financially prosper, simply based on a change in belief; apparently education, skills, experience, right place and time are all secondary...).

Without scientific proof of its effectiveness, all that can be scienficially said is that his program may OR may not be EFFECTIVE. With that type of uncertaintly this "hope" he is selling amounts to a leap of faith based on the well-known "placebo effect" (of course, supporters of Dr. Dyer would dismiss somebody who found it did NOT work for them, claiming the person did not sufficiently believe in the program).

Anyway, I gave the book 2.5 stars, as it is better than many others out there, and I it does seem that Dr. Dyer is sincere in attempting to do something positive (and does not it ONLY for the money) -- but who knows if I am right about that. As will all things in life in which we invest a great deal of effort, hope, money, time, etc., the "believer/buyer beware" principle applies.

It is too bad that one has to be cynical; but such is life.
