Product Description

Product Description

Depression is a disabling condition which can adversely affect a person's work, sleep, eating habits, and family life as well as one's overall health. Unfortunately, while commonly used treatments can be highly effective, they may not be ideal for everybody. For instance, some drugs have unwanted side-effects, and many people are turned off by the social stigma of going to therapy. Money can be an issue as well.

This is the point of Exercise Beats Depression. It is not a substitute for medical therapy, but rather represents another option that can be used alone or in combination with other treatments to effectively lower or eliminate the symptoms of depression.

Based entirely on randomized controlled trials, Exercise Beats Depression is a simple, yet effective program that can be done in the privacy of one's home with minimal cost or equipment. Exercise sheets are also included to help guide the reader through the step-by-step plan.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Anti-Depressant?, Oct 24 2009
This review is from: Exercise Beats Depression (Paperback)
VERY interesting book. According to the studies it cites from randomized controlled trials, exercise has been shown to be as effective as Zoloft, cognitive therapy, or psychotherapy. Furthermore, one study even took people that didn't respond to medications, and once put on an exercise program, they became less depressed.

With piles of research to back up its effectiveness, its a wonder we don't hear more about exercise used in the treatment of depression (hmmm, maybe because there's more money put into drug advertisements?). It has without a doubt been shown to be highly effective, and for gosh sakes, the book even points out that exercising by yourself at home is just as good as supervised exercise in a group format!

Anyway, this book will make it easy for anyone who wants to try this potent method. Not all kinds of exercise have been shown to be effective, but the book tells you which ones are. Also, you have to know how much exercise to do in order to get the anti-depressive effect- which the book reveals. It even leads you through a six-week program so you can't bungle things up.

It also needs to be said that the book doesn't recommend you skip seeing a medical professional either and just read the book. You can use the exercise program by itself, or in addition to other treatments you're getting.

All-in-all its the perfect guide for anyone who wants to use exercise to feel less depressed. If you're wondering just how to go about it, well, this book will show you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exercise Beats Depression, Oct 20 2009
This review is from: Exercise Beats Depression (Paperback)
This excellent book gets my highest rating. The fact that its content is research-based makes me comfortable with the program recommendations. It is written in a straightforward style using easy to understand language and it is well-organized - all attributes I consider essential for a "step-by-step" program. The conversational manner in which the author explains things is especially helpful at making the book easy to read and easy to follow. And very importantly, it presents a "do-able" program.

It is "do-able" because the author sets out a choice of exercise routines that fit various mobility capabilities or whether you choose to exercise at home or at a gym. I appreciate the fact that one size does NOT fit all when it comes to exercising. I could pick the most appropriate for me reflecting my capabilities and situation. Also, I didn't have to spend a lot of money for expensive equipment. I particularly like all the pictures showing someone doing the exercises and the detailed explanations and notes offering tips about each exercise. The progress tracking worksheets are also very helpful.
