Walk Tall! Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis, Nov 3 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Walk Tall! an Exercise Program for the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis (Spiral-bound)
I was disappointed in this book for my purposes. It is a lovely, very simple book of basic exercises. For someone who has had little experience, or who is in fairly poor shape, I think it would be welcome. I, however, have been doing yoga for a number of years, and was looking for a more sophisticated discussion. The illustrations are clear for what to do, but lacking for a good description of what not to do and why. There was not much information for those of us who have been following a program for years, and wanted to know how to adapt for a diagnosis of osteoporosis. I was left with the feeling that I had better just give up and lie down! Which I do not intend to do!

This is a very good book for people who want to strengthen their backs, especially the upper back, and improve posture. The exercises (one to a page) are clearly explained, but not with too much explanation so you get lost, and the author tells how each exercise helps you. There are simple little drawings of people to show how to do each exercise. The exercises are not difficult, and you do not need to do dozens of repetitions. The book is a good size, not too big, and lays open flat.
There are also sections on posture, walking, and how to do activities of daily living so as not to cause further damage to the back. This book was recommended to me by my physical therapist, and I know it will make a difference in my life now that I know what to do to strengthen my back. I had been working with weights, which was fine, but I was missing some of the small muscles that support the back.

This is a must even if you choose (as I did) to have other exercise books. It is a spiral book so it lays flat as you exercise and the illustrations make the exercises so clear. The exercises are easy but I can see the results. But perhaps the most valuable part of the book is reading about the exercises and movements you should NOT do.
